From Pakistan to Mannheim
Program ambassador

I'm Zubair and I'm a student of the master’s program in Business Informatics at the University of Mannheim. I am happy to support prospective students from abroad and thus contribute to the lively and worldwide network of the University of Mannheim.
Why I chose to study at the University of Mannheim
I was initially unsure because of the challenges of studying at a new university. But the International Office was really great – the Degree Seeking team answered all my questions and supported me in any way they could.
In the master’s program in Business Informatics you can specialize in many areas. That allows you to focus on your individual interests and strengths. And the international focus of the English-language master's program is just right for me.
Studying at the University of Mannheim
What's special about the University of Mannheim?
As a student of Business Informatics, Mannheim offers me the perfect balance between academic excellence and practical orientation. The university has close business links which makes it possible to apply everything you have learned to real-life-cases and I really appreciate that.
The University of Mannheim is ranked excellently in the most important global rankings. The international academic calendar of the University of Mannheim are well adapted to the academic calendar of partner universities around the world. These are certainly two reasons why the university is so attractive to many international students – almost one in five students at the University of Mannheim came from abroad.
It is also simply beautiful to study in one of the largest baroque palaces in Europe.
Extracurricular activities
In my free time, I like to go on trips to the countryside or go for walks. With the two rivers and the parks, there are already many beautiful places in the city. And with the S-Bahn you can quickly reach the Odenwald or the Palatinate Forest and the beautiful wine villages there.
And sometimes I also go out partying. The Schneckenhof parties at the university are a good place to go. But there are also good places to party in the city – or simply meet up with friends.
You also have the opportunity to get involved in numerous student organizations or your departmental student committee. The Institute of Sports offers a wide range of courses. Or you can make music or play theater.

What you need to know
Clichés
Yes, I definitely encountered some clichés about Mannheim – some of them were really surprising! One of the most common clichés is that Mannheim is purely an “industrial city” and not very attractive for students or international graduates. But since I live and study here, I can confidently say that this cliché does not reflect the full picture.
Mannheim is indeed a very lively and multicultural city that has a lot to offer beyond its industrial roots. The city has a vibrant art scene, a great ecosystem for start-ups and beautiful places like Luisenpark and Neckarwiese, which are perfect for relaxing after classes have ended. The “grid pattern” (the squares of Mannheim city center) may be unusual at first, but it is incredibly easy to find your way around town and it is part of what makes Mannheim so unique!
Challenges
Studying as an international degree-seeking student comes with a number of challenges. Adapting to a new academic system, dealing with bureaucratic processes in a foreign language and building a social network from scratch can be overwhelming at first. There is also the pressure of juggling studies and a part-time job or internship.
But my experience at the University of Mannheim taught me resilience, adaptability, and effective time management. Looking back today, I am proud of the progress I have made so far and excited about the challenges ahead.
