  • Program overview

Political Science deals with questions of power. Here in Mannheim, we focus on empirical questions regarding the distribution of power between groups or individuals. This means that we analyze the role of institutions, organizations, and the public in preparing, agreeing, and implementing political decisions within democratic and non-democratic regimes. Institutions are, for example, governments, parliaments, and courts. Organizations include parties and interest groups, while the public is everyone who lives in a certain country, region, or city.

The questions we deal with include, for example:

    • How do different groups evaluate their opportunities for political participation?
    • Why do politicians not always implement the most popular decisions?
    • To what extent are surveys considered in political decision-making?

The subject is divided into basic and advanced modules focusing on four areas of study:

    • International Relations
    • Comparative Politics
    • Political Sociology
    • Methods and Statistics

The supplementary modules include a career development module (including a mandatory internship), a social skills module (where students can choose from courses on media practice, IT, presentation and communication, and foreign languages), and a minor.

    Distribution of ECTS credits
You will complete approximately 125 ECTS in your core subject and approximately 60 ECTS in your combination major.

Studying Political Science in Mannheim has given me a solid foundation in academic work. It has also helped me to be more critical and demand more of myself when it comes to different perspectives and my own approaches. Since a large part of the program is taught in English, I was also able to significantly improve my language skills. I now feel well prepared to work in an international environment. The various courses cover a wide range of topics, so there are always exciting seminars to choose from.

Studying the bachelor’s program in Political Science and English and American Studies at the University of Mannheim provided me with sound methodological knowledge and analytical thinking, which are crucial for my doctorate at Trinity College Dublin. The opportunity to choose my own specializations and my experience abroad in the US and Ireland were particularly formative. Looking back, I am grateful for the broad education and the academic opportunities it opened up.

Thanks to its interdisciplinary approach and, above all, its focus on quantitative and empirical research, the degree program in Political Science at the University of Mannheim provides an ideal qualification for a future career in research or business. Additionally, choosing a specialization allows you to focus on specific topics that you are interested in. Furthermore, the close relationship with research institutions such as GESIS and MZES is reflected in numerous collaborations. Apart from that, the university's student organizations and departmental student committees offer great opportunities to get involved. Plus: Mannheim, my hometown, stands out above all for its charming suburbs and the different nationalities enriching the cityscape with their food culture, for example.

Studying at the University of Mannheim taught me critical thinking, perseverance, and to not always go down the first route I see. Although I studied Political Science, I now work in media and fashion. I previously worked at ASOS and Refinery29 in Berlin, and now work as a social media manager at Art Dubai in Dubai.

I was attracted to the University of Mannheim by its learning conditions, its close ties to research, and its international orientation. Like many of my fellow students, I worked as a student assistant and went abroad during my studies. My student assistant position improved my understanding of research processes and helped me to better analyze outcomes. Studying abroad was not just a valuable academic experience, it also helped me grow as a person. I am currently completing my doctoral dissertation at the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland) and working as an academic staff member at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
