Transgender Day of Remembrance

In many countries, trans* people are at risk of violence and of being murdered. The Transgender Day of Remembrance, which takes place annually on 20 November, commemorates the victims of transphobic violence worldwide.
In Germany, too, the number of registered cases of hate-motivated violence against trans* people is high and has risen in recent years, as status reports from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) show. As only a small proportion of those affected by gender-based violence report such incidents, the number of unreported cases is also high. Transphobic violence and discrimination also occur at universities and higher education institutions.
The University of Mannheim promotes diversity in all its forms and actively opposes discrimination. It offers the following points of contact at the Department of Equal Opportunity and Diversity for all members of the university who are affected by transphobic violence and discrimination: https://www.uni-mannheim.de/en/gender-equality-and-equal-opportunity/counseling/.
In addition, the university is currently offering various formats open to all members of the university where a diversity strategy is being developed. Furthermore, it is, among other things, expanding offers for trans people and raising awareness. Queer members of the university are also involved in their community and promote visibility and networking at the university, for example as part of Queer im Schloss (by and for queer students) or the LGBTQIA+ Network (by and for queer staff members).
On the occasion of the International Transgender Day of Remembrance 2025, the Trans*Action Weeks Rhine-Neckar organized by LGBTI Mannheim and LGBTIQ+ Heidelberg are being held. Until 23 November 2025, presentations and workshops as well as sports and art events will offer an opportunity to network, discuss, and learn. The main event of the Trans*Action Weeks is the memorial march on Saturday, 22 November, which starts at 4 p.m. on the market square.
