Before Applying

Are you interested in studying abroad?

All students at the University of Mannheim have the opportunity to integrate a stay abroad into their program. Applying for a university exchange program with a partner university is the easiest way to do this.

Find out more right at the beginning of your program by attending the orientation events on studying abroad.

Let's get started!

  1. Attend an orientation event.
  2. Find the partner university that suits you best.
  3. Check the different application deadlines.
  4. Find out about scholarships and financing opportunities.
  5. Take care of the application documents and proof of language proficiency.
  6. Find out whether and how your coursework and examinations completed abroad will be recognized.

And once you've been accepted, here is what happens next.

Alternatives to participating in an exchange program

Not all students have the opportunity to study at a partner university or are interested in doing so. There are other ways to integrate a stay abroad into your degree program:

During my semester abroad in Montreal, Canada, I encountered countless new experiences, formed lasting international friendships, and discovered a second home. From cozy cafés and vast national parks to modern skyscrapers and the historic old port—Montreal is full of contrasts. I hiked in both sunshine and snow, and was constantly impressed by the city’s diversity, which extends not only to its landscapes but also to its people. This cultural richness is mirrored in the city’s language landscape. As a master’s student in Language and Communication, I found the everyday situations of language contact fascinating—it was a chance to learn from real life, not just from books. Studying abroad helped me grow academically and personally. My advice? If you get the chance to go abroad—take it!

During my bachelor's degree, I spent a semester abroad in Bangkok. Chulalongkorn University is a very modern university and it was interesting to see how teaching is done there. Bangkok is the perfect starting point for traveling all around Asia and immersing yourself in different cultures. Spending a semester abroad was also an admission requirement for my current master’s program.

I spent my Erasmus semester in northern Italy—and it was the most amazing and exciting experience I’ve ever had. Not only do you meet people from all over the world and encounter different cultures and languages, but you also grow tremendously on a personal level. Of course, it feels unfamiliar at first to be in a new environment, but once you embrace the experience and settle in, you won’t want to leave. The great thing about studying abroad with Erasmus is that you get to truly immerse yourself in the host country—its traditions, culture, and way of life—and in doing so, you broaden your horizons. For me personally, I gained a second home and made friends for life. It was an incredibly enriching experience, and I can only encourage anyone who has the chance to spend a semester abroad: Go for it—it's absolutely worth it!
