Settling in at the University

The first day, the first week, the first month at university – they are full of challenges and new impressions. It is quite normal that you find some things easier than others; after all, you are experiencing many new things for the first time. But do not worry: you are not alone. Every semester, hundreds of students take up their studies in Mannheim – all with similar expectations and questions.

On this page and in the following sections, we answer the most important questions about starting your studies and settling in, and show you that the University of Mannheim is an open and diverse community. Here you will quickly find your feet and make new friends.

Cafeterias and the Mensa

Mensa, Café Soleil, Café EO: There are many places to have lunch together on the campus around the Schloss. And if you fancy a coffee or a sweet treat during your studies, there are plenty of places nearby.

University Sports

Play sports together and make new friends – it is easy with university sports, which offers around 80 different sports plus the sports partner exchange “Find a Sport Buddy”. The best part: almost all offers are free for students.

Student Organizations

From politics to careers to culture: there are more than 50 student organizations at the University of Mannheim. This is a great opportunity to pursue your interests, gain practical experience, and meet new people.

Departmental Student Committees

The university’s departmental student committees actively shape academic life. They organize events such as lectures and workshops, the weekend for first-year students, and the famous parties in the Schneckenhof.

AStA at the University of Mannheim
The university’s general student committee (AStA) represents the interests of all students and stands up for them. They bring students together—for example, on pub crawls or other events for new students.

Want to learn languages, do a Studium Oecologicum, take IT training, or improve your communication skills? Stay on the ball and meet new people with the Studium Generale or our certificate courses.

University Orchestra

The Mannheim University Orchestra rehearses new songs every semester and welcomes students from all institutions as well as working people.

The Mannheim University Choir counts more than 80 members and welcomes every additional person who wants to sing with them.
