This is How You Live and Study Only In Mannheim
When you think of studying, Mannheim is not the first place that comes to mind? We can change that.
The 'city of squares' in the north of Baden-Württemberg is fun, colorful, diverse and gets you right in the middle of the action. As a student, you will have the time of your life here. Why? Let us show you.
One day in Mannheim

I'm Phyllis and I'm studying Business Administration at the University of Mannheim.
Today, I'll show you what my life is like on a normal day at university.

This is Archie, my favorite flatmate. Unlike me, Archie is an early riser. At weekends, this can be rather inconvenient, as me and my flatmates all want to sleep in before we have a cosy breakfast in our shared kitchen. Today, however, it suits me just fine, as I have my first lecture in less than half an hour. And I ought to be on time.
By the way, I'm studying Business Administration at the University of Mannheim.
And today, I'll show you what my life is like on a normal day at university.
So, out of bed and off we go, cause we're in a bit of a hurry now.

Getting around the city of squares
Fortunately, distances are short in my university city.
Mannheim is really quite compact and has just the right size, for my taste. After just one week, I already knew my way around my neighborhood, the campus, and the city’s bars and clubs. Mannheim is known as the ‘city of squares’ because the city center is laid out in squares. For outsiders, an address like L1 may sound quite strange – but as an ‘insider’, you can quickly find your way around and know exactly that L1, for example, is directly opposite the Schloss or that A3 is the library of the School of Humanities.
Best of all, by bike, you can get almost anywhere in just a few minutes. This saves money and also benefits the environment – and cycling just makes me feel really happy.

Cosmopolitan and colorful
Mannheim may not win any beauty contests, but it makes up for it with plenty of character, vibrancy, and a relaxed attitude.
Industrial charm dominates Mannheim's cityscape, and there's a lot of it: We love to party in the old harbor quarter, for example. Everywhere you look, colorful murals by famous artists adorn the walls of buildings. Street art is very much alive in Mannheim and is not only tolerated, but actively fostered. This means that the city is constantly evolving and there is always something new to discover.

Studying at the Schloss
My campus provides a stark contrast to street art and the like: Together with my fellow students, I study in and around the largest baroque palace in Germany. And that definitely makes my university one of the most beautiful in the whole of Germany.
Of course, beauty is relative. But who can claim to have their seminars in a real palace? The combination of high ceilings with stucco and our modern lecture halls is what makes it so unique. Walking across the Ehrenhof, the large palace courtyard, to the next class or to the library feels truly extraordinary. A fellow student of mine recently talked to Spiegel Online about studying in Mannheim – and I can only second what she said!

Taking a break
Meeting up with fellow students for a matcha latte or cappuccino during breaks between lectures or while studying in the library has already become part of my routine. There are a few spots near the university where we can chat freely and enjoy our favorite drinks at affordable prices.
By the way, here in Mannheim, the value-for-money ratio is not only good for coffee, but also for rents. Just ask my friends in Frankfurt ...

Partying at the Schloss
Actually, they keep visiting me on Thursdays. And it's perfectly clear why: That's the night of our famous Schneckenhof parties. They take place in the courtyard of the Schloss, which creates the most amazing atmosphere. There's something special about dancing to the latest beats surrounded by historic walls and towers.
I think I can safely say that this is one of the best party locations in Mannheim – and has been so for more than 50 years.

City, beach, river
Tonight, though, I'm going to spend the evening on the quieter side: My friends and I are going to cycle to the Rheinterrassen, the beautiful banks of the Rhine, and just hang out there.
In Mannheim, we have two riverbanks to choose from: the Rhine and the Neckar. Speaking for myself, I like watching the sunset on the Rhine, but I prefer jogging along the banks of the river Neckar. But that's for tomorrow.
Tonight, it's time to: Have the time of our lives!
