Why I chose to study at the University of Mannheim

I am a student of the master's program in Sociology.

I believe that a good sociologist should understand both philosophy and statistics – in other words, combine deep thinking with an understanding of numbers. Many of the world's great thinkers and social theorists come from Germany, which really inspired me. I was already passionate about sociology at school and it was therefore my dream to study in Germany.

I chose the University of Mannheim because it is one of the top universities for sociology in Germany and it offers a master's program taught entirely in English. The beautiful campus and strong international community also played a major role in my decision.

Studying at the University of Mannheim

  • What's special about the University of Mannheim?

One of my favorite sociologists is Karl Mannheim. So I think it's very cool that I'm now studying social theory and empirical analysis in a city that happens to have the same name. It was also here that I began to develop my own sociological theory, which is why this place is so special to me.

The University of Mannheim also offers everything I need for my studies – excellent libraries, a great sports program, free wireless, and a supportive environment.

  • Extracurricular activities

The University of Mannheim offers more than 50 sports programs and I play volleyball and basketball about three times a week. When the weather is nice, you can also play beach volleyball – that's really great.

I also like going to the Schneckenhof parties with friends – the atmosphere on campus at these events is just great.

I also take part in the field trips organized by the International Office and have already visited Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Heidelberg, for example.

After graduation

What you need to know

  • Clichés

I have always felt welcome in Mannheim. Of course it's a different culture, but that's something I have learned to appreciate. In my experience, it is not true that the people of Mannheim are cold or dismissive, as some people claim.

  • Challenges

One of the main challenges is to stay focused – especially during the long hours in the library. So I would say, work on your “stamina”—by that I mean, get used to sitting and reading for long periods of time. This really helps to cope with the workload.
