  • Program overview

Developing a general understanding of the subject is at the heart of the bachelor's program in Economic and Business Education. This includes economic issues at both the governmental and corporate level, business administration topics, as well as subjects from business law and business informatics.

A key focus of the degree program is the perspective of business and economics education. You will engage with questions such as: “Under which conditions do adolescents and young adults acquire economic competencies?” or “How can learning in the workplace or at vocational schools be designed effectively?” To address these questions in a scientifically grounded manner, you will acquire methodological and analytical skills in research methods and statistics, and learn how to conduct academic studies.

The program is complemented by internships in companies and schools, as well as a wide range of elective courses.

  • Career opportunities

With a degree in Economic and Business Education, you can work at a school. This is, however, not the only option open to you.

Outside the school sector, you will be ideally prepared for roles across all areas of business and industry. You will take on responsible roles not only in human resources development or educational consulting, but also in areas such as marketing, finance, or consulting—similar to graduates of a traditional Business Administration degree. At the same time, all elective subjects are open to you, allowing you to tailor your qualifications to your individual interests and career goals.

If you would like to prepare for a career in the corporate sector, the elective subject Corporate Learning offers a special opportunity to deepen your knowledge in a business context. It allows you to focus more strongly on business-related topics such as workplace learning. In this elective, you will explore changes in the world of work and the associated learning processes of employees and organizations. After completing your bachelor’s degree, you may either enter the corporate world directly or continue to specialize academically.

For a career in education, the bachelor’s degree provides the foundation for the master’s program in Business and Economics Education. After completing the master’s degree and the subsequent preparatory service (Referendraiat), you will be qualified to teach at vocational schools. The career path in teaching is open with all elective subjects except Corporate Learning.

A completed master’s degree also qualifies you to pursue a doctorate in the respective field, including on a part-time basis alongside professional employment.

  • Studying abroad and internships

    Studying Abroad

    Internships
In the bachelor's program in Economic and Business Education, you must complete two mandatory internships. The program includes seminars that prepare students for their internships and offer them support.

    • Students choosing any elective subject other than Corporate Learning (one internship at a school and one at a company)
The school internship lasts for two weeks and is completed between the fourth and fifth semester at a secondary school with a commercial focus in Baden-Württemberg.
The company internship lasts eight weeks and can be completed in various areas of a business or company. It is also completed between the fourth and fifth semesters.
    • Students choosing the elective subject Corporate Learning (two company internships)
The first company internship remains unchanged and consists of eight weeks between the fourth and fifth semester.
However, instead of the two-week internship at a school, you will complete an additional two-week internship at a company in order to further strengthen your focus on the non-school sector.

I opted for Economic and Business Education at the University of Mannheim because I was very attracted to the combination of Business Administration, education, and an elective subject. The program is really varied and diverse. A great aspect of the program in Economic and Business Education is that you don't have to commit during your studies to whether you want to do a teaching internship after completing your master's degree and become a teacher or pursue a career in business – and even later on, you can still switch between the two fields. The excellent reputation of the University of Mannheim and the opportunity to spend a semester abroad also convinced me to study here. In my everyday student life, the departmental student committee is particularly helpful because it is a great place to go with questions and to talk to other students, including those from other semesters.

The excellent reputation of the University of Mannheim and the impressive architecture of the Schloss as part of the campus made my decision to attend this university easy. I am fascinated by Economic and Business Education because it combines economic expertise with educational responsibility. The versatile program not only provides me with a solid foundation in both areas, but also gives me the freedom to pursue different career paths, whether in education or business. I also particularly appreciate the vibrant campus life. The central location, the diverse student activities, and the special atmosphere on the campus surrounding the Schloss make studying here something very special.

I chose the University of Mannheim because it has a very good reputation in the field of Economics and the Schloss is simply stunning. What I particularly like about my program in Economic and Business Education is that it will open up many paths for me after I graduate. I can decide right up until the end whether I want to go into teaching or work in the private sector – I think this flexibility is great. I also like the atmosphere on campus and the many leisure activities and student organizations at the university, which further enrich my time as a student.
