Research Focus Areas

In 2025, the University of Mannheim undertook a broad-based, participatory process to redefine its research focus areas. The research focus areas bring together expertise across schools and disciplines, create gateways for cooperation, and highlight the university's research strengths. Together, scientists from various departments are conducting research into how modern societies can be understood and adapted to the challenges arising from profound societal transformations. In doing so, they focus not only on the development of models, but also on the framework conditions required to successfully implement new technologies. Moreover, they promote acceptance of such technologies in society.

The realignment was primarily based on a survey on current and future research topics conducted among all researchers at the university. In addition, the university conducted analyses of publications, research environment and third-party-funding. The results were then discussed and developed further in several workshops with researchers. Moreover, the research strategy committee, the President's Office, the individual schools and external “critical friends” reviewed them. In December 2025, the Senate approved the following new research focus areas:

The web pages regarding the research focus areas are still under construction and are being updated continuously.
