Hi! I’m Philipp and I’m studying the bachelor’s program in Culture and Economy with History and Business Administration at the University of Mannheim. I have been at the university since the fall semester 2023/24 and have also been active in the departmental student committee for History and Classical Studies since then. If you have any questions about studying, everyday life as a student, or the university and life here in Mannheim in general, don't hesitate to reach out to me!

Philipp, program ambassador for Culture and Economy: History (B.A.)

Why I chose this program

The program in Culture and Economy combines a core subject in Cultural Studies and a combination major in an economic subject. I chose History as my core subject and Business Administration as my combination major. In all bachelor's programs in Culture and Economy, you can choose between Business Administration and Economics.

History as a core subject involves the study of cultural systems and historical developments in society. Here in Mannheim, the program focuses on cultures and societies in Europe and America but also on economic, legal, and social history. In addition, students gain an overview of all historical periods from ancient to modern history. If you choose Business Administration as a combination major, you can attend courses on finance, marketing, management, business informatics, accounting, and production. If you choose Economics as a combination major, you will learn about statistics and gain an insight into microeconomics and macroeconomics.

I chose this program because the combination of history and economy is unique in Germany. Additionally, this double qualification in cultural and economic sciences does not only open the door to a wide range of master's programs but is also useful from a professional point of view.

Studying at the University of Mannheim

  • What’s special about the program?

As the name of this program implies, it also includes cross-cultural aspects. The double qualification does not only convey solid basic knowledge in economics but also allows you to deepen your knowledge of history. During your studies, you will take various intercultural courses and seminars on other cultural studies, which will expand your competences and knowledge.

Moreover, the University of Mannheim is known for its international profile. Not only does it have an international academic calendar, but you also have many partner universities in numerous countries to choose from if you decide to spend a semester abroad.

In addition, students and teachers are in close contact in the core subject of History. Due to the often quite small number of students in a course, the atmosphere is friendly, and the teachers are also able to offer individual support to the students.

  • Extracurricular activities

At the University of Mannheim, there are many things you can do alongside your studies. You can try out numerous sports programs, go to the Schneckenhof parties on Thursdays, explore Jungbusch, or dive into the city’s diverse restaurant scene. In addition, there are various student organizations, student groups, and departmental student committees, where you can also make good contacts and meet new people outside your courses. You should definitely consider joining one! The departmental student committees are particularly beneficial, as they allow you to meet students who are studying the same core subject. You can also get useful tips from fellow students in higher semesters at any time.

You will surely find plenty of things to do in your everyday life alongside your studies!
