Mannheim Master in Data Science
Program ambassador
Hi! I’m Natalie and I’ve been enrolled in the Mannheim Master in Data Science (MMDS) program at the University of Mannheim since the fall semester 2024. Before that, I also completed a bachelor's degree in Business Informatics at the University of Mannheim. Do you have any questions about the program or about studying at the University of Mannheim in general? I’m happy to answer them.
Why I chose this program
Mannheim might not be the most beautiful city in the world, however, it does have a lot to offer as a university city—I can strongly recommend it to everyone. The Mannheim Master in Data Science (MMDS) program is a future-oriented program where you acquire advanced knowledge in interesting fields such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and large-scale data management.
This program combines a wide range of courses with hands-on projects and research opportunities. Some modules build on topics from the bachelor’s program in Business Informatics while others offer a completely new insight into modern methods of data analysis and their application to real-world problems.
In a world where the demand for qualified data scientists is constantly growing, the MMDS program offers a perfect combination of mathematics, informatics, business administration, and economics to prepare you for a career in this field.
Studying at the University of Mannheim
What’s special about the program?
The MMDS program is taught in English and offers you the opportunity to specialize in many different areas. A key feature is its interdisciplinary orientation, combining mathematics, informatics, business administration, and economics. The program covers modern and advanced topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, large-scale data management, big data analytics as well as the visualization and interpretation of data. On top of that, the MMDS provides insights into the latest developments and trends such as deep learning and, in particular, transformer architectures, which are, for example, used in ChatGPT.
In numerous projects, that are often to be completed as a partial examinations for courses, you can apply your theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. Another advantage is the flexible structure of the program. Alongside mandatory modules, you can choose from numerous elective modules to pursue your individual interests and career goals. There you can choose not only from modules in informatics but also from courses in the field of mathematics, such as Reinforcement Learning, or in the field of business administration, such as Process Management and Analytics.
Since the program is taught in English, you immediately learn the relevant technical terms and read and write project reports and have discussions in English. That’s a major advantage when starting your career, in particular if your goal is to work abroad.
Extracurricular activities
In the numerous student organizations and departmental student committees at the University of Mannheim, you can pursue your personal interests and devote yourself to topics that really matter to you. The possibilities range from academic student organizations and social commitment to your first steps into the start-up scene. Whether as a representative of your department in bodies, where you discuss improvement opportunities with professors, or as player in the university soccer league, the University of Mannheim offers countless opportunities for you to get involved and make new experiences. I personally have had many exciting experiences and met great people.
Additionally, Mannheim is a vibrant and diverse city that has plenty to offer for students. Culturally, the city impresses with numerous museums, sports venues, and theaters. For people who enjoy partying, there is a great number of clubs and pubs in the city center. The excellent location in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region is another big plus. The proximity to the financial metropolis Frankfurt not only opens up career prospects but also makes the search for a part-time student job particularly attractive.
After graduation
Further study
After finishing the master's program, you can pursue a doctorate, which will enable you to embark on an academic career. A doctorate will give you the opportunity to dive deeply into a specific research area, find innovative answers to complex questions, and expand your expert knowledge.
Career opportunities
MMDS graduates can profit from excellent career prospects due to the ever-increasing demand for qualified specialists in the field of data science. They are in high demand in various industries, such as technology, finances, health care, or consulting, as well as in start-ups. Thanks to the interdisciplinary approach of this program mainly taught in English, which combines profound knowledge in mathematics, informatics, business administration, and economics, you will be ideally equipped to succeed internationally.
The location in Mannheim also offers optimal conditions: In addition to an excellent academic infrastructure, the location in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region—one of the largest and most dynamic economic regions in Germany—offers numerous opportunities to network, complete internships, and gain other practical experience. This makes the MMDS program a perfect foundation for a successful career.
What you need to know
Master's program in Business Informatics or the MMDS program?
The Mannheim Master in Data Science (MMDS) program and the master’s program in Business Informatics at the University of Mannheim are closely connected and have a similar structure. Most of the subjects you can choose overlap, the main differences being the structure of the individual mandatory elective modules and the mandatory modules. A key difference is that in the MMDS program, students can only choose courses from the MMM (Mannheim Master in Management) program that are directly related to data science. Examples include Text Analytics, Process Management and Analytics, and courses in the field of Marketing Analytics.
In practice, the differences between these programs of study are often hardly noticeable. Many courses are attended by students from both programs together, and it is not uncommon that it takes you a while to realize that a fellow student is studying Business Informatics and not Data Science.
Another aspect is the admission process: Although there is no official numerus clausus for the MMDS program, the application process is quite competitive due to the high demand. It may therefore be reasonable to apply for both the Business Informatics and the MMDS program as their content is very similar and they mainly differ in details.
Language proficiency
Most courses in the MMDS program are held in English only. Lectures are in English, as are your project reports, written exams, and oral examinations. Since most of the academic literature in the field of data science is also in English, a good command of the language is essential.
However, the level of English required is not overly high and should be manageable with a good school or university education. Nevertheless, it’s important that you’re aware of this and sure that you’re comfortable working in English before you apply. Studying in English also offers you the advantage of being perfectly prepared for an international career.
