Sculptures

Sculptures, statues, and busts shape the appearance of the University of Mannheim and enrich the campus environment. Placed in various locations throughout the university, these works connect classical and modern forms, reflecting both the university`s history and current artistic movements.

The Antikensaal

The Antikensaal showcases an extensive collection of Hellenistic sculptures, offering insight into the historical art holdings of the former Electoral Palatinate residence.

Originally intended for the education of young artists, the collection soon drew the attention of renowned intellectuals such as Goethe, Schiller, Herder, and Lessing. When Elector Karl Theodor moved to Munich in 1778, he took the casts with him. In the 1970s, Mannheim archaeologist Wolfgang Schiering succeeded in acquiring new casts and partially reconstructing the collection. Since 1991, the sculptures have once again been on display in the Schloss.

The Antikensaal is located in the Ostflügel of the Schloss.
