Diversity Day May 2025: University of Mannheim sets an example for diversity

The 13th German Diversity Day is set to take place on May 27, 2025, as part of a national campaign. Diversity Day was created by Charta der Vielfalt e. V. to emphasize the significance of diversity in the work environment and to promote inclusion, equal opportunities, and increased awareness.

For many years, the University of Mannheim has shown a strong dedication to promoting diversity, achieving impressive outcomes: The successfully completed “Vielfalt gestalten” (“shaping diversity”) audit (2022–2024) and the renaming of the Department of Equal Opportunity and Diversity mark important milestones on the continuous path towards more diversity and an appreciative, diversity-friendly climate for everyone. The Department of Equal Opportunity and Diversity is actively collaborating with various partners to achieve this objective, recognizing that the audit was a significant step, yet the pursuit of diversity is a continuous effort.

Events in May 2025

This year, the University of Mannheim is reaffirming its commitment to showcasing how diversity is practiced and nurtured in the everyday experiences of its academic community. The Department Equal Opportunities and Diversity is actively inviting individuals to join, think critically, and build connections at a series of events:

  • Diversity climate survey – ends 1 June
The survey on the diversity climate at the university has been running since 12 May. The university invites all its members to provide their insights, aiming for a genuine understanding of diversity at the University of Mannheim and to pinpoint areas for targeted improvement.
  • Diversity booth on 27 May outside the Mensa
Diversity Day offers an opportunity for students to get involved and be active. At the booth, they will find engaging activities designed to promote self-reflection.

Past events:

  • Diversity Round Table on 19 May
Members from all sectors of the university join forces to establish a long-term strategy for diversity, aiming to introduce tangible initiatives that promote a more welcoming university culture.
  • “Check your Diversity!” – awareness stop-by during Staff Days on 14 May
The diversity exhibit included a series of minor challenges and thought-provoking games, including a handful of enlightening insights: “Do I have unconscious biases?”, “How well-versed am I when it comes to gender issues?”, “And when was the last time I questioned my privilege?”
  • Networking for equal opportunities – Mannheimer Frauenbündnis (“Mannheim Women's Alliance”) on May 13
The focus here was on exchange and mutual support among women in Mannheim.
