Mannheim Data Science well represented at Informatik 2024 in Wiesbaden

On September 26, 2024, the Mannheim Center for Data Science (MCDS) participated in the Data Science Community Workshop: “Current Developments and Perspectives (at Universities) in the Field of Data Science” at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden. The workshop built on the successful launch at INFORMATIK 2023 and aimed to foster cross-regional networking among data science initiatives. Representatives from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – particularly from universities and data science institutions – were invited to deepen the dialogue and further expand collaboration.

The workshop was divided into three sessions:

SESSION 1: Data Competence Centers – This session focused on the importance of data competence centers in research and education. Dr. Regina Jutz from the University of Mannheim (BERD@NFDI), chair of the session, moderated the discussions and presentations. The first speaker, also from Mannheim, Dr. Julian Dehne from GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, presented the KODAQS project, which promotes best practices for measuring data quality in the quantitative social sciences.

SESSION 2: Data Science Centers & Posters – This session highlighted the activities of various data science centers and featured poster presentations. Dr. Julian Dehne chaired the session, during which MCDS and BERD@NFDI were presented as two data science initiatives from the University of Mannheim. Dr. Lea Oberländer, Manager of MCDS, gave a short pitch presenting the center’s poster, which showcased MCDS’s research and networking activities. Dr. Regina Jutz presented the BERD@NFDI poster along with its new website, a research infrastructure for unstructured data in the social sciences.

SESSION 3: Data Science in Education & Community Engagement – This session explored the integration of data science in education as well as the importance of community engagement.

The workshop provided an intensive exchange of concepts, experiences, and best practices. Participants discussed the challenges and opportunities of the digital age, laying the foundation for sustainable networking within the data science community. The goal was to continue the dialogue and strengthen collaboration in the future.

The Mannheim Center for Data Science is proud to be part of this cross-regional network and looks forward to advancing future collaborations with other initiatives.
