The “Highly Cited Researchers” list recognizes scientists whose work has had a particularly strong impact worldwide. It includes the internationally most frequently cited researchers in 21 disciplines across the natural, life, and social sciences as well as in the “Cross-Field” category.

To be included in this list, researchers must have published “Highly Cited Papers”—publications that are among the most cited in their field and year of publication. A high citation frequency is considered an important indication of a publication’s scientific relevance. For the current list, publications from 2014 to 2024 were taken into account.

In addition to quantitative criteria such as the number of citations, qualitative analyses and evaluations by experts are also part of the selection process. This way, researchers whose work has had a lasting, global impact on their field are identified.

Sabine Sonnentag, professor of Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Mannheim, is part of this group for the second time in a row: her 194 publications listed in the “Web of Science” have been cited over 21,000 times to date—which is proof of the international influence of her research.

At the University of Mannheim, the psychologist is analyzing how work can be designed to promote employee performance while minimizing health problems. Her research focuses on dealing with stress in the workplace, the importance of regeneration, and the individual characteristics and behaviors that help people successfully cope with professional demands.
