Between 2020 and 2022, the researchers at the University of Mannheim raised a total of 33.5 million euros from the DFG. In Social Sciences, the University of Mannheim has received 26 million euros. This is the fourth highest amount in Germany. The current data have been published in the “Funding Atlas 2024” of the DFG.
Looking at individual subject groups, Economics stands out in the current edition: With a funding amount of 10.4 million, they rank second in Germany behind the University of Bonn. Social Sciences ranked fourth with 26 million euros in funding.
The DFG Funding Atlas lists the forty German universities and non-university institutions that were able to acquire the most public external funding in the reporting period from 2020 to 2022. These are funds that researchers usually raise in competitive processes to carry out research projects. External funding is an important component of university funding, as it provides additional resources for academic activities.
“This year's results once again highlight the impressive research performance of the University of Mannheim in the Economic and Social Sciences,” says Professor Dr. Jutta Mata, Vice President for Research and Career Paths in Academia at the University of Mannheim. “Our good ranking in these areas underlines the strength of our university in terms of DFG third-party funding, despite the relatively small number of professors.”
The University of Mannheim’s success is based on its specialization. Its focus on Economic and Social Sciences and the wide range of expertise help the university to start groundbreaking research projects that are funded by third parties.
In the area of coordinated programs, the two local Collaborative Research Centers (Transregios) “Accounting for Transparency” (TRR 266, since 2019) and “Ökonomische Perspektiven auf gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen: Chancengleichheit, Marktregulierung und Finanzmarktstabilität” (TRR 224, since 2020) are funded. Since 2017, the DFG has also been funding the Research Training Group “Statistical Modeling in Psychology” and, since 2022, the Research Unit FOR 5157 “Strukturieren des Inputs in der Sprachverarbeitung, dem Spracherwerb und Sprachwandel (SILPAC)”.
