After You Have Been Accepted
You have already received a confirmation of your placement at one of our partner universities?
Congratulations! Before going abroad, you have to complete the registration process at your host university. We are happy to advise you! On this page, you will find all important information and quick access to the Mobility Online portal.
Registration and admission to the host university
You have already received a confirmation of your placement at one of our partner universities. To be able to take this placement, you are only missing the official admission by your host university.
You just need to complete two more steps in order to be admitted:
- First, we will register, or “nominate”, you at the host university on behalf of the University of Mannheim.
- Usually, you will then need to compile and submit some additional documents in a second step.
The application for admission at the host university is just a formality. If you submit your complete application in due time, you are very likely to be admitted to your host university as an exchange student. It is very rare that any issues arise that may keep you from going abroad. The University of Mannheim will assist you during the entire process. If there are any problems, get in touch with your advisor at the International Office.
- We will inform you on the nomination and the application process at your host university in due time via e-mail.
- You are not sure if you have received an e-mail containing this information? You can always check on the status of your application on the Mobility-Online platform.
- The following documents are commonly requested by host universities: the university’s application form, your preliminary course selection, proof of language proficiency, a current transcript of records, a copy of a current ID or passport.
- You are welcome to prepare for this process. Please read the documents provided in the download section of the Mobility-Online platform. They contain information on the next steps and important matters such as insurance, visa, booking flights, finding housing and many more.
The Erasmus code for the University of Mannheim is: D MANNHEI01. If you have been offered an exchange place at a university in an EU country, you may need this code when applying to the host university or for your Learning Agreement.
Selecting courses and recognition of examinations and coursework
In the next weeks, you should find out about the courses offered at your host university. Some host universities already want to know which courses you would like to take when applying for admission. An important factor for choosing courses is which ones can be recognized by the University of Mannheim. Further information on how to go about selecting courses can be found here. For advice, please contact your departmental exchange coordinator. They can also help you with obtaining the signatures required for the Learning Agreements.
Letter of appraisal
Some host universities require a letter of appraisal to be submitted enclosed with the application. Should your host university require an appraisal, please have it written by your school.
- Students of the Business School may also request a letter of appraisal via the website of the Business School.
- Students of the School of Humanities can request a letter of appraisal via the application form on the website of the School of Humanities (PDF).
- Students of the other schools (Social Sciences, Law/
Economics, Business Informatics and Mathematics) need to directly contact their teachers. Please ask them to use the following template (PDF, 138 kB) for the letter of appraisal.
Please only ask for a letter of appraisal if we have asked you to do so via e-mail.
Letter of appraisal template (PDF, 138 kB): The chairs can also request the letter of appraisal template from us in MS Word format.
Translation services
If you need a certified translation of a document (e.g., a transcript) for your application to the host university, you can contact the Studium Generale translation service or search the interpreter and translator database for certified translation agencies that are authorized to produce certified translations.
Scholarships and financing
Certainly, you thought about how to finance your stay abroad even before applying. At the time you receive your admission, some deadlines for applying for a scholarship might have lapsed already; yet, there are certainly still some scholarships and other financing options that might be relevant for you. The application deadlines for scholarships such as PROMOS or the Baden-Württemberg-Stipendium are a good example. All future Erasmus students will be informed on how to apply for Erasmus funding for European exchange programs in due time.
Country-specific funding and support
Depending on the host country, there are country-specific funding options available in addition to the regular scholarships. In this section, we have compiled further useful information on some countries and regions.
Reports
If your are looking for information and tips regarding your host university, please read the reports of former students that are listed in our database of partner universities.
You can write and submit your own report later via the Mobility Online portal. Students in bachelor's programs are welcome to write their reports in German or English. Due to the increasing number of master's programs taught in English, we ask all students in master's programs towrite their reports in English.
You will need confirmation that you have submitted your report in order to apply for recognition of coursework and examinations completed abroad.

Extending your stay abroad
If you are studying abroad in the fall semester and would like to extend your stay by another semester, this is possible in some cases. If you are interested, please contact the International Office at the University of Mannheim.
They will consult with the relevant department to determine whether the University of Mannheim is able to extend your stay abroad as this is only possible if the exchange balance with the host university allows it.
In Europe and the overseas north regions, it is generally not possible to extend your stay from the spring semester to the fall semester. In the overseas south regions, a extending your stay abroad from spring to fall may be possible in rare cases.
If it is not possible to extend your exchange place, you can ask the host university whether you can extend your stay as a free mover. Alternatively, you can consider whether you would like to follow up your semester abroad with an internship abroad.
Canceling your stay abroad
Please immediately inform the International Office (via e-mail) and your respective departmental exchange coordinator at the University of Mannheim should you not be able to start on your stay abroad. We will see to the cancellation of your placement at the host university. A stay abroad can only be canceled due to valid reasons. In addition to personal problems, this also includes crises such as the coronavirus pandemic. For reasons such as these, you can of course withdraw from your stay abroad at any time.
