Think Tank on Cultural Change: White Paper Published

Digital transformation is reshaping our working environment, presenting new challenges for universities. The latest White Paper from Think Tank 09 by bwUni.digital offers insights on how to manage this cultural shift effectively. It provides actionable recommendations for university leadership and human resource developers, urging active engagement with this change.

Digital transformation is not only about new technologies but also involves profound changes in work and organizational cultures. Universities face the challenge of not just accepting this transformation but actively shaping it. Think Tank 09 by bwUni.digital has taken on this task and published its White Paper on “Cultural Change” in July 2024. It was primarily conducted by the University of Mannheim, with the involvement of Timo Petersen and Laura Becker from the WANDELdigital team.

From Resistance to Change: Three Perspectives on University Culture

The White Paper is based on a clear premise: Digital transformation is not just a technical process but requires cultural adaptation. The paper explores three key aspects across its chapters: First, it examines how cultural transformations function in the context of digitalization and the prerequisites needed for success. The second section delves into established theories of organizational culture to better understand changes within universities. Finally, the third part provides specific recommendations on how universities can proactively manage cultural change. A key focus is the social acceptance of these changes—a factor that the authors argue has often been overlooked.

For university leadership and HR developers, the White Paper offers practical approaches for cultural diagnostics and development. The suggested measures aim to involve staff and students in the transformation process and to overcome resistance. This way, digital transformation is seen as an opportunity rather than a crisis.
