Elections on 9 June

The German Rectors' Conference (HRK) is calling for participation in the European elections. At the same time, regional and local elections are being held in many places.

Europe stands for freedom, diversity, and democracy. Especially in times like these, when our democratic values are being put to the test, it is more important than ever that citizens actively protect them. The European elections on 9 June offer us all the opportunity to stand up for democracy and help shape the future of Europe.

The German Rectors' Conference (HRK), the freie zusammenschluss von student*innenschaften (fzs) e. V. (the umbrella organization of constituted student bodies in Germany) and the Deutsche Studierendenwerk (DSW, the umbrella organization of organizations for student affairs in Germany) are calling for participation in the election with the motto “Grenzenlos studieren. Europa wählen!” (Study without boundaries, choose Europe). The call for action is not only aimed at students but all members of the university.

The HRK has summarized the science policy ideas and goals of the major German parties campaigning for election in Germany here. The answers to eight questions can be directly compared with each other. The HRK had asked all the major parties currently represented in the Bundestag, which have agreed to a standardized procedure for answering such questions.

In addition, the EU & I application, which two doctoral students from the University of Mannheim were involved in developing, offers decision-making support for the European elections.

Local elections are held in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate at the same time as the European elections. In Mannheim, the 48 members of the city council will also be elected. Those who take part in the election actively determine the composition of the committee and thus the direction of local politics in Mannheim. The Voto tool, which was co-developed by a data scientist at the University of Mannheim, provides support in making voting decisions. The tool includes 33 theses on various urban policy topics such as the transport transition, law and security, immigration, and housing. For each of these theses, users can choose between five different possible answers. Voto is available at https://app.voto.vote/kowa24-mannheim.
