    • What is funded?
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes), and the foundation Stiftung Mercator cooperatively organize the Carlo Schmid Program (website only available in German) providing scholarships and internships at international organizations and EU institutions.

Applicants have the possibility to either search for an internship on their own and then apply for a corresponding scholarship or to directly apply for one of the numerous internships advertised as part of the program.
Participants of the program receive a monthly grant for subsistence expenses and fixed-rate grants for travel expenses.

In addition to financial support, participants are offered a program of activities such as seminars and meetings abroad.

    • Who is funded?
The program is open to all students and graduates from both bachelor’s and master’s programs regardless of their respective subject area. In order to be admitted to the program you need to hold German citizenship. Applicants can chose between the following two program options:

                        – Option A: Applying for a scholarship for an internship at an international organization or EU institution or at selected NGOs that the applicant has found on his/her own

                        – Option B: Applying for a specific internship advertised as part of the program

    • Application deadline
As a rule, each year in February.
For the specifications of terms, application requirements, and further information on the program please see the website of the DAAD.
  • DAAD grants for travel expenses for AISEC internships

The DAAD provides grants for travel expenses for subject-specific AIESEC  internships outside Europe. For more information, please see the website of the DAAD.

  • DAAD short-term scholarships for internships

The DAAD provides funding for internships abroad at specific organizations and institutions, such as institutions of the EU or UN, German representations abroad, international German schools or Goethe institutes, that are organized by the interns themselves and independently of any internship programs. The maximum funding period is three months. Funding includes a grant for travel expenses. For more information, please see the website of the DAAD.

  • DAAD Internationalisation of teacher training („Lehramt.International“)

Within the area of individual funding, a specialized scholarship program has also been established in teacher education to support internships at schools abroad. It features two program tracks, with a particular focus on students preparing to become elementary school teachers.

    • Program track 1: Students of teacher education programs from all disciplines and school levels can receive support for short-term, self-organized internships abroad (lasting one to six months) at schools or other educational institutions around the world. The call for applications, eligibility requirements, and additional information on the program are available on the DAAD website.
    • Program track 2: This track is aimed at graduates of teacher education programs. It seeks to bridge the gap between the first phase of training (degree program) and the practical phase during the teacher preparatory service (Referendariat) through an international internship experience. Funding is available for internships abroad (covering mobility and living expenses) taking place between the first and second state examinations or after completion of a master’s degree, with a duration of at least six and up to twelve months. The call for applications, eligibility requirements, and additional information on the program are available on the DAAD website.

You can find insights, tips, and experiences from student of teacher education programs abroad on the DAAD’s campaign website Studieren weltweit – Erlebe Es! (Study worldwide – Experience it!).

The funding provides a partial scholarship of EUR 600 per month and a grant for travel expenses of up to EUR 800. Requirements for participation include that scholarship recipients be no older than 26 at the time of application and have German citizenship.

  • Erasmus grants for internships

    Who is funded?

As part of the ERASMUS+ program, the European Union promotes internships while pursuing or after completing a degree program in one of the 33 participating program countries and in partner countries worldwide. Applications are open to students in bachelor’s, state examination and master’s programs as well as enrolled doctoral candidates and graduates in their first year after graduation . In order to benefit from internship funding as a graduate, you will have to submit an informal application before the end of your studies, i.e. before disenrollment. If you are interested, make sure to contact the International Office in good time.

Currently. program countries (all EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey) and partner countries(all countries that are not program countries) participate in the program. Applications for Erasmus+ internship funding in partner countries outside the EU (e.g., the United Kingdom, Switzerland, or the United States) are also possible, but the budget for these countries is smaller and therefore not always available. Details can be found on the website of KOOR – Erasmus Services BW, the central coordination office at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.

    What is funded?

The program offers financial support for internships abroad in order to compensate for low amounts or lack of payment.

There are three types of internships:

    1. Long-term on-site internship abroad (EU or overseas). The internship lasts between two months (60 days) and 12 months (360 days). Students (bachelor's/master's/PhD programs) and graduates can do a long-term internship.
    2. Blended long-term internship. The on-site phase abroad (EU or overseas) lasts at least two months (60 days). There is also a virtual phase of at least one day. Students (bachelor's/master's/PhD programs) and graduates can complete a blended long-term internship.
    3. Blended short-term internship. The on-site phase in an Erasmus+ program country lasts at least five days and a maximum of 30 days. There is also a virtual phase of at least one day. Only students with fewer opportunities and students from degree programs whose examination regulations stipulate a mandatory internship of up to one month may apply for funding for a blended short-term internship.

    Application deadline

Please submit your funding application to KOOR – Erasmus Services BW as early as possible. There are two application periods for Erasmus internship funding:

    • Applications for internships within the Erasmus program countries (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, North Macedonia, Turkey) starting between 1 February 2025 and 15 August 2025 are still possible, until the funding has been completely used up.
    • Applications for internships within the Erasmus program countries (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, North Macedonia, Turkey) starting on or after 16 August 2025 will be accepted starting 16 June 2025.
    • Applications for internships starting on or after 1 August 2025 and taking place outside the EU (Erasmus+ worldwide, including the UK) are unfortunately only possible on a waiting list basis.
    • Applications for internships starting on 1 January 2026 and taking place outside the EU (Erasmus+ worldwide, including the UK) will be accepted starting 3 November 2025

All documents must be submitted at least two weeks before the start of the internship.

Please note that the application requires a number of documents and signatures, including the signature of the company. If your application is not complete by the application deadline, funding will not be granted. Unfortunately, it is not possible to submit missing documents later.

    What is not funded?

Internships at institutions of the European Union (such as at a political party or as a member of the European Parliament) as well as at institutions governing EU programs cannot be funded. For these internships, funding is available through the Carlo Schmid Program.

There is an internship salary cap of EUR 1,500 gross per month. This cap applies to internships both within and outside the EU.

Where can I find more information about funding and apply for funding?

The University of Mannheim does not award funding directly, but through KOOR – Erasmus Services BW. The entire application process is therefore handled by the liaison office.

    Required insurance coverage

The Erasmus mobility grant does not include insurance coverage. We will inform you about which insurances you need to arrange. You will also need these for the Erasmus application.

Special support for students with fewer opportunities

Students with fewer opportunities are participants who have children taking part in the mobility, have a chronic illness, have a disability degree (Grad der Behinderung, GdB) of 20 or higher, are employed, or are first-generation university students. The KOOR – Erasmus Services BW website provides information on additional funding opportunities.

Receiving funding for more than one internship

It is possible to receive funding more than once if the total funding period (including Erasmus funding for studying abroad) does not exceed twelve months per phase of study (bachelor’s/master’s/doctorate). The maximum funding period for programs without bachelor’s and master’s phases (for example state examination programs) is 24 months. If you have already received Erasmus funding for studying abroad during the same phase of study, this will be counted towards the maximum funding period.

How likely am I to receive funding?

The allocation of funds is on a first-come, first-served basis. The decisive factor is the date of receipt of the complete application. Financial support is only possible subject to the availability of funds.
