Research Data Management Seminars: Responsible use of AI in Research

Vasilka Paunova, Dr. Renat Shigapov

Research Skills

Generative AI is transforming research: from writing and coding to literature review and data analysis. But its use also raises critical concerns about research integrity, transparency and data protection.

This talk introduces key recommendations from the European Commission’s “Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research”, focusing on what individual researchers need to know.

We highlight practical responsibilities for researchers:

  • disclosing substantial AI use
  • verifying outputs
  • avoiding overreliance on AI-generated content
  • and protecting sensitive data and intellectual property.

Emphasis is placed on human accountability, critical oversight and ethical reflection at every stage of the research process.

The goal is to empower researchers to use generative AI responsibly maximizing its benefits while safeguarding trust, quality and reproducibility in scientific work.
