The Vienna University of Economics and Business from Austria, the Technical University of Nuremberg, Tilburg University from the Netherlands, the NHH Norwegian School of Economics in Norway and the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland – all of these universities were represented this year together with the University of Mannheim in the lecture series Data Science in Action, which took place for the third time at the University of Mannheim in the fall semester of 2024. From September 12 to December 5, the lectures took place weekly online in front of a large audience. After the presentations of current research results, the lecturers were available for questions and discussions.
The topics of the lectures were numerous and ranged from “Semantic Web and Machine Learning Techniques” (Marta Sabou) to “Large Language Models” (Steffen Eger, Siegfried Handschuh) and “Adaptive Experiments” (Davud Rostam-Afschar). From the University of Mannheim, the following professors from the Faculty of Business Administration, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Information Systems and Business Mathematics took part: Davud Rostam-Afschar (Professor of Accounting), Florian Keusch (Professor of Social Sciences), Leif Döring (Chair of Probability Theory), Nicole Altvater-Mackensen (Chair of Psycholinguistics), Valentin Lang (Junior Professor of International Political Economy) and Jana-Rebecca Rehse (Junior Professor of Management Analytics).
Students of the Mannheim Master in Data Science, as well as doctoral students from the Mannheim Graduate School (GESS) and Master's students from engage.eu partner universities could apply for a place on the course and take an exam. The lecture series was also open to guest students.
A continuation in 2025 is planned and the MCDS is looking forward to welcoming many interested participants.
