Directions

Welcome to Germany! To help you plan your journey to Mannheim, we have compiled a list of the different travel options you have.

How To Get Here

  • from Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

    by train:
If you fly to Frankfurt Airport, you can reach Mannheim via train (ICE, IC). The ICE or IC trains departing from terminal 1 (follow the signs “Fernbahnhof/long-distance trains”) take about 30 minutes to reach Mannheim main station (Mannheim Hauptbahnhof). Further information can be found on www.bahn.de.

Please note that the direct route between Frankfurt Airport and Mannheim Central Station will unfortunately be closed at the time of your arrival for the spring semester 2024. This means that there will no longer be any direct trains and you will have to take a small detour to catch a connecting train at Frankfurt central station which is fairly close to Frankfurt airport or Mainz central station. Please be aware that these detour connections may be affected by additional delays. Therefore, please do not rely on the travel time given to you on the Deutsche Bahn website and be sure to include a generous time buffer in your travel plans.

If you booked an in-person move-in appointment with our housing partner Studierendenwerk, a delayed arrival in Mannheim may result in missing the appointment and having to arrange for a hotel for your first night.

    by bus:
As an alternative to taking the train, you can travel to Mannheim by long-distance bus. More information on bus routes and prices can be found on:

  • from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN)

    by shuttle bus:

If you arrive at Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HHN), then your best option for travelling to Mannheim is taking a bus to Mainz and then change to a train to Mannheim.

For booking the bus we recommend these two platforms.

    https://www.checkmybus.de/flughafen-frankfurt-hahn/mainz

Prices range from €15 to €20 and the bus takes around 75 minutes.

Upon arrival in Mainz you need to get the train at the Main station, which is a few minutes walk from the bus stop. There are different options for trains that take different amounts of time (between 45 and 90 minutes) and vary in costs (between €18 and €22), so be sure to book the right one to avoid being fined.

When exiting the main station through the main entrance, keep straight for about 200m, then turn left onto Bismarckstraße. Follow the Bismarckstraße until you reach block (Quadrat) L 1, across from the Schloss. The International Office is located in L1, 1.

    by tram:
Exit the main station through the main entrance. Right outside the main station is the bus and tram station “Mannheim Hauptbahnhof”. Take the tram line 1 with destination Schönau until the station “Schloss”. The International Office is located in L1, 1.
