Career

I gained my first academic experiences while studying Economics and working as a student assistant at the Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim. After having earned by Diplom, I stayed at the University of Mannheim. From 2002 through 2008, I was an academic staff member at the chair of Macroeconomics of Professor Schröder. Schröder also was my supervisor for my doctoral studies. In March 2008, I earned my doctorate and started as senior economist for country and capital market analyses at Feri EuroRating Services AG. In 2012, I was appointed Professor of Economics at Ostbayrische Technische Hochschule (OTH) in Regensburg.

Tips for starting your career

Try to broaden your horizon and always be open to inspiration from other disciplines.

Gain practical experience and test various environments for yourself. Working as student assistant is a very good opportunity for this, as you can work on a topic for a longer period of time.

Prepare each application process carefully. It is not about knowing everything or be capable of everything; if you are just starting your career, this will not be possible. If you are well prepared, however, you demonstrate that you are serious about the job and have the ability to learn about a new topic. In addition, this helps you to decide whether or not the topic really interests you. If this is the case, it will be easy to take on the new task and learn more.

Relevance of the studied program

My program was the basis for my professional career and it also set my standards for scientific work.  The University of Mannheim offers a great network of research institutions and other partners from which students and graduates can benefit. The university’s reputation is very good which certainly opens some doors when you start your career or, at least, makes people curious about your profile.
