Visa, Health Insurance, Housing
Read about visa and entry requirements
As the entry requirements for Germany vary from country to country, please inform yourself in time about the respective requirements for your home country and apply for an entry visa (if required) as early as possible.
Tip: If it takes a long time to get an appointment in your home country, you can book an appointment as soon as you receive confirmation of receipt of your application documents. Only at the date of the appointment you must present the letter of admission from the University of Mannheim.
Countries that do not require a visa:
Citizens of EU and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) do not need a visa to stay or study in Germany.
Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa to stay or study in Germany; instead, they have to request a residence permit at the responsible foreigner's office in Germany as soon as they have enrolled at a university in Germany.
- Andorra
- Australia
- Brazil
- Canada
- El Salvador
- Honduras
- Israel
- Japan
- Monaco
- New Zealand
- San Marino
- Korea (South Korea)
- UK
- USA
Please note that you may be subject to visa requirements depending on your citizenship and not on the country where you are going to study. For example, if you are studying in a European country and have a residence permit for this country, you still need to apply for a student visa for Germany. In order to do so, please contact the German embassy in your home country or in the country you are currently studying in.
Students who require visas:
Students from all other countries must apply for a visa for Germany while still in their home country. A tourist visa cannot be accepted for entry into Germany. You can find more information on visa on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
Please apply for your student visa as soon as possible at the responsible German embassy or consulate in your home country. When applying, please present the official letter of admission (“Zulassungsbescheid”) from the University of Mannheim.
All students who require an student visa must also present their visa during enrollment.
It is not possible to exchange a tourist visa for a student residence permit once you have entered Germany, you are not allowed to study at the University of Mannheim with a tourist visa! Please make sure that you obtain a visa for the purpose of studying.
Visa and health insurance
If you need a visa to enter Germany, when applying for the visa, the embassy will check whether you have health insurance coverage for Germany that is valid for the entire period of the visa. As you can only become a member of a statutory health insurance in Germany from the day of enrollment, you should take out a private (travel) health insurance in your home country that covers the period of the visa.
Health Insurance
If you study in Germany, you are required to have health insurance. Your health insurance is valid from the day of enrollment and is also payable only from that day.
Your insurance status will then be transmitted to the university electronically by the statutory health insurance provider. Uploading a PDF file is not possible.
You can contact the statutory health insurance providers even before you arrive in Germany in order to arrange for membership. The International Office offers you an opportunity to make an appointment with several German health insurance provides.
Please request the “Meldegrund 10 für die Universität Mannheim” as soon as possible after admission, so that we receive your proof of health insurance coverage as early as possible. Without this proof, enrollment is not possible.
To check whether we have already received your reporting reason M10, please visit Portal² (see instructions).
Please note: If you are already enrolled in another degree program at the University of Mannheim, proof of health insurance coverage is not required.
Please read the following information applying to your case/
nationality carefully. Citizens of the EU and the EEA
If you are an EU citizen enrolled in statutory health insurance in your home country while studying in Germany (e.g. via family insurance) you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in Germany.
Using the EHIC as proof of valid health insurance, you can have a German health insurance provider certify your 'exemption from insurance' for Germany.´ For this purpose, please contact any statutory health insurance provider in Germany and request the “Meldegrund 10 für die Universität Mannheim”. The International Office offers you an opportunity to make an appointment with several German health insurance provides.
If it is not possible for you to use your EHIC, you have the possibility to take out statutory health insurance in Germany.
Statutory health insurance providers
You can contact the statutory health insurance providers even before you arrive in Germany in order to arrange for membership. The International Office offers you an opportunity to make an appointment with several German health insurance provides. Your insurance status will then be transmitted to us electronically by the statutory health insurance provider.
All German statutory health insurance providers offer student health insurance for around EUR 120 per month. Insurance coverage starts with the date of enrollment and must be paid from this date.
Please note that student health insurance can only be taken out by students under the age of 30. Otherwise, students have to take out private health insurance.
Private health insurance
If you are not an EU citizen, you can also take out private health insurance in Germany or use a private health insurance from your home country. In this case, you must have your insurance documents checked by a statutory health insurance company for enrollment and request the “Meldegrund 10 für die Universität Mannheim”. The International Office offers you an opportunity to make an appointment with several German health insurance providers.
We strongly recommend that our students from countries outside the EU take out statutory health insurance in Germany. Otherwise, you will usually have to pay doctor and hospital bills yourself first. This can quickly amount to very large sums (depending on the illness/
injury, treatments can cost several thousand euros!) Moreover, it usually takes some time until you are reimbursed by your home health insurance provider, leaving you with the risk of running into financial problems. We would like to inform you that insurance companies in your home country often do not have the same coverage as (statutory) health insurance companies in Germany.
Please note that, once you have decided against taking out a German statutory health insurance policy, this decision cannot be reversed during your studies.
In the following document, we have summarized the standard benefits of statutory health insurance: Standard benefits of statutory health insurance (PDF).
Housing
You should start searching for accommodation as soon as you know when you will arrive in Germany.
Finding your own apartment or dormitory room is often quite difficult – it pays to start looking for accommodation early. In addition to the information available on the website of the University of Mannheim, we have compiled some tips and advice especially for international students on Portal²:
Health impairment
Do you have any health restrictions that you would like to inform us about? If so, please contact the team for international degree-seeking students at the International Office (you can find the contact details at the bottom of this page) before your arrival in Germany/
Mannheim, giving your name and application ID. Study Peers program for international students
The Study Peers Program for international students at the University of Mannheim, organized by the International Office, is there to help you settle in. You will be assigned a Study Peer, an experienced student of the University of Mannheim, who will assist you in getting used to life in Mannheim and at the university. Your Study Peer can help you in academic matters, for example.
Prospective students of the MMM Program can sign up for the MMM International Buddy Program 2024. All participants in the Buddy Program will be able to participate in all events and offers within the International Office’s Study Peers Program. A separate registration for the Study Peers Program is not necessary in this case.
Packing your bags
You do not know exactly which things to take with you to Germany and the suitcase seems to be by far too small?

Read your examination regulations and learn about exam registration
Each degree program has examination regulations which outline the coursework and examinations to be completed by students. This document also contains information on examination deadlines, circumstances in which an examination can be re-taken, the number of ECTS credits required to start the final thesis, and the exact degree awarded.
You need to register for exams during the semester. The requirements and conditions for registration, withdrawal, late registration, change in registration are different for every program. Exam registration is done via Portal².

Registering your residence at the residents' registration office
You need to register at the competent residents’ registration office within two weeks after your enrollment at the University of Mannheim. The residents' registration office is is an institution where every resident of a city must be registered. Depending on whether you live in Mannheim or in another city, you must register with the Mannheim citizen's services office (Bürgerdienste Mannheim) or with the responsible office in your place of residence.
The following documents are required for registration:- Passport
- Completed registration form (available at the residents' registration office or at the International Office)
- Landlord's confirmation of residency (PDF) (The form must be filled in and signed by your landlord. If you live in a residence hall of the Studierendenwerk, you will receive the form from the janitor when you move in).
Opening a bank account
A German bank account often makes it easier to pay fees (rent, insurance, registration and semester fees, etc.).
Many banks offer free accounts for students, e.g. Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank or Postbank. Some banks even offer free bank accounts for all customers, which means that you will not have to pay any fees after your studies.
You can open a bank account as soon as you:
- have registered your residence in Germany and received a citizen’s registration certificate;
- have a tax ID (tax identification number). This will be sent to you by mail within approximately 14 days after you have registered your residence. Corner-cutting: As a rule, you can obtain your tax ID at the counter of the tax office (e.g. in L 3) as early as three working days after registering. An online appointment is required for this.
Registering for the public broadcasting license fee (Rundfunkbeitrag)
The public broadcasting services in Germany offer a high-quality information and entertainment programme as well as independent reporting – on the radio, television and internet. This programming is made possible by the licence fee, which is currently 18.36 euros per month. As part of a contributory financing model, everyone who lives in Germany is obligated in principle to pay this fee.
On this page you will find answers to all frequently asked questions regarding the broadcasting fee and the registration.
Please note that the public broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) has also to be paid for apartments in a residence hall, e.g. of the Studierendenwerk.
