Blood Donation at the Schloss: Ten Minutes That Can Save Lives

The Student Committee at the University (AStA) and the Department of Safety and Security jointly call on members of the university community to participate in the upcoming blood donation drive organized by the German Red Cross (DRK). On 2 October, staff members and students will have the opportunity to donate blood directly on campus. Advance registration is required.

The process is simple: book an appointment online and be sure to drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids on the day of donation. On-site, registration is carried out with a photo ID, followed by the completion of a medical questionnaire. A small laboratory test and a brief medical consultation will determine your eligibility to donate. After the actual blood donation, there is a short recovery period with snacks. Participation is considered working time.

Date: Thursday, 2 October 2025
Time: 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Location: Katakomben, Schloss
Appointment Booking: https://terminreservierung.blutspende.de/oeffentliche-spendeorte/Uni-MA-Katakomben-im-Schloss/termine

Why Is Blood Donation Important?
Blood supplies are often in short supply – especially in emergencies or at certain times of the year. In Baden-Württemberg and Hesse alone, approximately 2,700 blood donations are needed daily. That means someone in our region requires a blood donation every 32 seconds. Just one donation in the Katakomben can save up to three lives and is essential for surgeries, the treatment of chronic illnesses, and recovery after accidents. The time required is minimal – only one hour in total, with the blood draw itself taking just ten minutes. A healthy body can easily compensate for the 500 milliliters of blood taken.

Recently had a cold or flu-like infection?
You may donate blood once you have been symptom-free for one week after a cold. If you had a flu-like infection with fever or the flu itself, the waiting period is four weeks.
