PD Dr. Dr. Massimiliano Livi (Trier University)

Schloss, SN 163

The lecture is part of the university-sponsored conference „Transnational Perspectives on Europe’s Extreme Right“ in cooperation with Engage.EU.

Profile:
Dr. Massimiliano Livi (Trier University) is a historian and sociologist. His research focuses on contemporary European history, particularly on the transformation of work cultures, processes of political radicalization, and cultural trends in Italy and Germany. He is author of numerous publications and has previously worked at the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” at the University of Münster and teached at the universities of Bari, Bielefeld, and Metz.

Abstract:
Through the lens of the Italian case, the talk explores the evolution of radical and extreme right-wing movements in Europe from the post-war period to the present, tracing their historical roots, ideological transformations, and increasing plurality. Building on Norberto Bobbio’s interpretative framework and on the crisis of twentieth-century political cultures, the reflection seeks to distinguish between neo-fascist continuities and new forms of non-fascist radical right that emerged in response to the cultural and social transformations of late modernity. From a historical-comparative perspective, the contribution highlights the processes of internal differentiation within the right-wing field, the relationship between memory and the rewriting of the past, and the cultural genealogy of contemporary European new right movements.
