This page provides you with information on exam registration, late registration, withdrawal, and de-registration, as well as resitting exams. Please refer to the non-official versions of the examination regulations for more details.
Exam registration
You need to register for all exams. It is each student’s responsibility to register for their first examination attempt by the end of the applicable registration period via Portal². You often have the option to take your written exam either on the regular or the alternate examination date. Should you register for the alternate examination date, please bear in mind that in most cases, you will have to wait a year until you can resit the exam in the event that you fail or do not take the exam.
Exam registration

You are required to register for every examination. This does not only include written exams, but also courses in which your assessment is based on term papers, presentations, or similar. If you do not register for an examination, we cannot enter any ECTS credits or grades into your records. For term papers and other coursework and examinations, you need to register by the end of the general registration period via the student portal. For examinations that are not taken in the form of a written exam, and for foreign language skills courses taken in Romance Studies, you can only register for the regular examination date.
Late registration
Late registration for an exam (either for the regular or alternate examination date, provided this is an option for the exam in question) is possible up to three days prior to the respective examination date via Portal². For examinations that are not written exams, the deadline for late registration expires on 27 May 2024. Please observe the applicable deadlines to ensure that your examinations can be scheduled without overlaps.
Late registration

For examinations that are not written exams, the deadline for late registration expires on 27 May 2024. Change in registration
Students may change their registration for written exams from the regular to the alternate examination date or vice versa up to three days prior to the regular examination date (provided this is an option for the exam in question) via Portal².
In order to make a change in registration please first withdraw from the respective exam in Portal² and then register again for the desired date. For more detailed information, please see instructions.
Withdrawal and de-registration
You can withdraw from a (written) exam in Portal² up to three days prior to the examination date. This also applies to examinations that you have been automatically registered for by way of mandatory registration. If no examination date is indicated in Portal², the general deadline for withdrawal from an exam is 27 May 2024 . The same applies for examinations other than written exams that allow for a withdrawal.
Withdrawal and de-registration
You can withdraw from a (written) exam in Portal² up to three days prior to the examination date. This also applies to examinations that you have been automatically registered for by way of mandatory registration.
If no examination date is indicated in Portal², the general deadline for withdrawal from an exam is 27 May 2024 . The same applies for examinations other than written exams that allow for a withdrawal.
Withdrawal from an exam is only possible if
- you have not yet taken any exams or completed any coursework that are part of the same module and
- you are currently not taking any exams or completing any coursework that are part of the same module.
If an examination comprises several components, you need to request withdrawal from this exam using the relevant form.
After this period, it is no longer possible to withdraw from the exam. It is then only possible to request to be de-registered from the exam provided that you have a valid reason such as illness (see further information on de-registering from an exam).
Resitting an exam
If you fail a (written) exam on the regular examination date or are unable to take an exam you are registered for due to a valid reason, you will be registered to retake the exam on the alternate examination date of the semester in question by way of mandatory registration, provided you have further examination attempts left for the respective exam. If you would like to retake the exam in question in a subsequent semester, mandatory registration is not possible; instead, you will have to register again on your own responsibility for the respective examination date in the desired semester.
Resitting an exam
If you fail a (written) exam on the regular examination date or are unable to take an exam you are registered for due to a valid reason, you will be registered to retake the exam on the alternate examination date of the semester in question by way of mandatory registration, provided you have further examination attempts left for the respective exam.
If you would like to retake the exam in question in a subsequent semester, mandatory registration is not possible; instead, you will have to register again on your own responsibility for the respective examination date in the desired semester. This also applies to examinations not taken in the form of a written exam. In these cases, you are required to sign up for a new course at the earliest opportunity and to register for the respective exam yourself.
