Questions about the taster courses

  • What do our taster courses offer?

For us, taster courses mean: You take part in some selected regular courses at the University of Mannheim. Our departments recommend these courses particularly for prospective students. This way you can get an impression of the current classes.

Taking part in taster courses may be helpful if you are interested in several programs and you are looking for an opportunity to compare these programs better. Even if you already have a specific program in mind and would like to take a closer look at it, taking a taster course is a good opportunity to do so.

  • Is prior knowledge required to take part in a taster course?

No previous knowledge is required to take part in a taster course.

The main aim of the taster course is to give you an authentic insight into programs and subjects and thus a more precise idea of their content and working methods. Do not be confused if it is not always easy for you to follow everything that is presented in class! The courses are primarily intended for students in a specific program or studying a particular subject. They already have different specialist knowledge than you.

Nevertheless, you can gain many impressions of the courses. You may even find your dream program during the taster course. Together with other information and experiences from your study orientation, these personal insights will certainly help you. You can also use our reflection sheet (PDF) – ideally before you attend the first classes. You will need one copy for each subject you want to learn about in the taster courses.

You can then bring the completed forms to a personal consultation session , for example. Please feel free to make an appointment!

  • When do the taster courses take place?

The taster courses are offered every semester during the lecture period. The University of Mannheim has aligned its academic calendar with the international academic year. Lectures begin in the fall/winter semester in September and in the spring/summer semester in February. The exact dates for the respective semester can be found on our website "academic calendar".

The time frame for your individual participation is variable. Based on the current offer, you can select the dates on which you want to participate in a taster course. Please note that in the last two week of lectures, examinations are due in many subjects and it may no longer be possible to take part in taster courses during this time. The last weeks of lectures are usually at the beginning of December (fall semester) or the beginning of June (spring semester).

It is best to attend the courses at the beginning of the semester, as this makes it easier to follow the content. You can also attend taster courses in the middle of the semester. However, please bear in mind that you may be less able to understand the content at this stage because the content of the class develops over the course of the semester.
