Academic librarians work as information specialists at the interface between research, teaching and the library. Central areas of responsibility are the subject-related selection and indexing of academic literature, collaboration in library management, personnel management, publication and research data management and the teaching of information skills.

Duration of the training: two years
Start of the training: every year on 1 October (every two years)
Vocational training pay: remuneration of civil servant candidates in accordance with the Act on Remuneration for Civil Servants (Landesbesoldungsgesetz) Baden-Württemberg
Training structure:
- One-year practical training at Mannheim University Library: comprehensive familiarization with the various departments and fields of activity of the higher-level civil service at Mannheim University Library, internships in other library, publishing and archive institutions
- One-year theoretical training at the Bavarian Library Academy in Munich

Required skills and qualifications
- completed Diplom, Magister, state examination or master's degree, doctorate is desirable
- in-depth knowledge of the advertised scientific field and academic working methods
- enjoy working with people, good communication skills
- strong ability to work in a team and personnel management skills
- interest in information technology, especially in digital infrastructures such as open access, publication and research data management,
- organizational skills and ability to work independently and on projects
