Mannheim Master in Data Science
Program ambassador

Hey, I’m Tim and I am studying the Mannheim Master in Data Science (MMDS) program at the University of Mannheim since the fall semester 2023. Before that, I studied the bachelor's program in Business Informatics in Mannheim from 2019 to 2023. I would like to give you an insight into the program and I am happy to help you with any questions you may have.
Why I chose this program
Mannheim might not be the most beautiful city in the world, however, it does have a lot to offer as a university city – I can strongly recommend it to everyone. The Mannheim Master in Data Science (MMDS) program is a future-oriented program that transmits advanced knowledge in interesting fields like machine learning, artificial intelligence and large-scale data management.
The program combines a wide range of courses with hands-on projects and research opportunities. Some modules build on topics from the bachelor’s program in Business Informatics while others offer a completely new insight into modern methods of data analysis and their application to real-world problems.
In a world in which the demand for qualified data analysts is constantly growing, the MMDS program offers a perfect combination of Mathematics, Informatics and Economics that will prepare me for a career in this field in the best way possible.
Studying at the University of Mannheim
What’s special about the program?
The MMDS program is taught in English and offers you the opportunity to specialize in many different areas. A key feature is its interdisciplinary orientation, which combines Mathematics, Informatics and Economics. The program covers modern and advanced topics like machine learning, artificial intelligence, large-scale data management, big data analytics as well as the visualization and interpretation of data. On top of that, the MMDS provides insights into the latest developments and trends such as deep learning and in particular transformer architectures, which are used in ChatGPT, for example.
In numerous projects, that are often to be completed as a partial coursework, we can apply our theoretical knowledge to real problems. Another advantage is the flexible structure of the program. Alongside mandatory modules, we can choose from numerous elective modules to pursue our individual interests and career goals. You can choose not only from modules in Informatics, but also from courses in the field of Mathematics such as reinforcement learning or in the field of Economics such as process management & analytics.
Since the program is taught in English, we are introduced to relevant specialist terms early on and learn to read and write project reports and discuss topics in English. That’s a major advantage when starting your career, in particular if your goal is to work abroad.
Extracurricular activities
In the numerous student organizations and departmental student committees at the University of Mannheim, you can pursue your personal interests and get involved in issues that really matter to you. The possibilities range from student organizations and social commitment to the first steps into the start-up scene. Whether as a representative of your department in bodies, where you discuss improvement opportunities with professors, or as player in the university soccer league, the University of Mannheim offers countless opportunities for you to get involved and make new experiences. I personally have had many exciting experiences and met great people.
Additionally, Mannheim is a vibrant and diverse city that has plenty to offer for students. Mannheim impresses with numerous museums, sports venues, and theaters. For people who enjoy partying, there is a great number of clubs and pubs in the city center. The excellent location in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region is another big plus. The proximity to the financial metropolis Frankfurt not only opens up career prospects, but also makes the search for a part-time student job particularly attractive.
After graduation
Further study
After finishing the master's program, you can pursue a doctorate, which will enable you to embark on an academic career. A doctorate will give you the opportunity to dive deeply into a specific research area, to find innovative answers to complex questions, and to expand your expert knowledge.
Career opportunities
MMDS graduates can profit from excellent career prospects due to the increasing demand for qualified specialists in the field of Data Science. They are in high demand in fields like technology, finances, health care, consulting or in start-ups. Through the interdisciplinary education which combines profound knowledge in Mathematics, Informatics and Economics as well as the English language skills acquired, you will be ideally equipped to succeed internationally.
The location in Mannheim offers three optimal conditions: In addition to an excellent academic infrastructure, the location in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region – one of the largest and most dynamic economic regions in Germany – offers numerous opportunities to network, complete internships, and gain practical experience. This makes the MMDS program a perfect foundation for a successful career.
What you need to know
Master's program in Business Informatics or the MMDS program?
The Mannheim Master in Data Science program (MMDS) and the master's program in Business Informatics at the University of Mannheim are closely intertwined and offer a similar program structure. Most subjects can be chosen in both programs. The main difference lies in the structure of the courses of the different mandatory and mandatory elective courses. The main difference is that students in the MMDS program can only choose those courses from the MMM (Mannheim Master in Management) that are directly related to the field of Data Science, for example, text analytics, process management & analytics as well as courses in the field of marketing analytics.
The differences between the programs are often hardly noticeable. Many courses are attended together, and it is not uncommon to realize after a long time that a fellow student is studying Business Informatics and not Data Science.
Another difference is the admission to the program: Although there is no official numerus clausus for the MMDS, the application can be quite competitive due to the high number of applicants. It can therefore be useful to apply for both programs, Business Informatics as well as the MMDS, as the programs are very similar and the differences lie rather in the details.
Language proficiency
In the MMDS program, most courses are exclusively in English. The lectures are held in English, project reports need to be written in English and written exams and oral examination will also take place in English. Since the largest part of research literature in the field of Data Science is also written in English, solid language skills are necessary.
The required English skills are not overly demanding and should be manageable with a decent school or university education. However, this needs to be taken into account and you should make sure that you are comfortable using English before applying for the program. Studying a program in English offers many advantages and prepares you perfectly for an international career.
