Career

I completed a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Mathematics in Business and Economics in Mannheim. In the bachelor's program I focused on economics, in the master’s program I focused on finance and business administration and stochastics. For me it was important to choose subjects in the field of mathematics that I enjoyed. As the program combines several fields, you can choose to specialize in areas beyond mathematics. I also seized the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in the USA, which was really exciting.

In addition to my studies, I worked as a tutor for mathematics for several semesters and I completed different internships. I wanted to learn more about working for insurances and in the finance sector, in particular. I attended several job fairs, which did not always turn out to be useful, though. Personally, I think the “MINT-Marktplatz” (STEM marketplace) of the School of Business Informatics and Mathematics was the most helpful.

I found my current employer, a consultancy with a quantitative approach, by participating in a workshop. After the workshop I applied to the company and was hired. Today, I work as a business consultant.

Tips for starting your career

I would recommend prospective students and students to choose subjects they enjoy. I also recommend them to do internships in the sectors they would like to explore. Consultancies are always a good place to go. It is also useful to learn at least two coding languages and be able to proof basic programming skills.

Relevance of the studied program

My employer mainly hires mathematicians and physicists, which is why my studies were crucial for getting the job. I acquired skills that come in handy today. That includes analytical thinking, the ability of abstraction, adaptability, and the ability to familiarize myself with new topics quickly. Thanks to my studies, I became more independent, learned how to do things in a structured way, and acquired relevant basic programming skills. It makes sense to focus more on programming during your studies and internships. I broadened my technical knowledge on the job.
