ZEW and University of Mannheim Receive 1.6 Million Euros for Joint Tax Research

The funding was approved by the Senate of the Leibniz Association on 21 March 2023. In addition, the State of Baden-Württemberg will support the ScienceCampus with 0.4 million euros. The University of Mannheim and ZEW will invest a further 2.4 million euros in tax research within the framework of MannheimTaxation over the same period.
“Since its establishment, MannheimTaxation has repeatedly succeeded in bringing together the smartest minds in economics, law and political science from Germany and abroad to tackle prevalent issues in tax research,” says MannheimTaxation spokesperson Professor Christoph Spengel, ZEW Research Associate and Chair of Business Administration and Taxation II at the University of Mannheim. “MannheimTaxation has been a great success for almost a decade now. The interdisciplinary collaboration allows us to consider economic, entrepreneurial, political and legal aspects when dealing with fiscal issues,” says ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.

In the new funding phase, research at the ScienceCampus will focus on

1. taxation, innovation and sustainable growth,
2. tax avoidance and evasion, latest developments in international taxation,
3. tax incidence and (re)distribution, as well as
4. fiscal policy and green taxation in the EU.

The research alliance MannheimTaxation regularly holds conferences and workshops in Mannheim, which offer distinguished researchers from nationally and internationally renowned universities the opportunity to network with young economists, and provide a platform for specialist lectures, debate and the mutual exchange of ideas. The next Annual MannheimTaxation Conference will take place on 7 and 8 September 2023.
MannheimTaxation is funded jointly by ZEW, the University of Mannheim, the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Leibniz Association, of which ZEW has been a member since 2004. MannheimTaxation currently involves a total of 70 professors and (junior) researchers.
Founded in 2012, the Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI) is another ScienceCampus, within the framework of which ZEW and the University of Mannheim organise scientific projects that focus on competition, regulation and innovation.
