Conference Proceedings “Preserving and Understanding. Dealing with the Past and Present”

The third volume in the “Alter lernt und forscht” series was published by Röhrig Universitätsverlag in December 2017 under the title: “Bewahren und Begreifen. Dealing with the past and present”

Preserving the past and understanding the present from the past is the focus of this volume. In the first part, the authors undertake the task of preserving historical figures such as the 'revolutionary general' Johann Philipp Becker, the committed lawyer Anita Augspurg and the Frenchman Victor Noir, who became a cult figure, from oblivion. However, a woman's personal testimony of flight and expulsion, the significance of a village lime tree in changing times and the generational history of a rural homestead are also to be preserved.

Social change processes are the focus of the second part. The authors shed light on the population change in the city of Speyer from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages, the employment of women in the context of the First World War, the changing perception of mental illness, notable political quotes such as “... the pension is safe” and the new intermediate generation of self-determined grandmothers of the 21st century.

All contributions were written by senior citizen students as part of the “Alter lernt und forscht” project at the University of Mannheim.
