In Memory of Gabrielė

Ten years ago, on 3 October 2013, Gabrielė Zebrovskyte, an exchange student from Lithuania, was murdered while walking home at night. Her death was a great shock to the region and a serious blow to the University of Mannheim.

A few weeks before her death, Gabrielė had come to Mannheim as an exchange student from her home university in Vilnius, Lithuania. The twenty-year old student of Psychology was a very committed young woman and had a promising future ahead of her.

In 2014, the University of Mannheim has established the Gabrielė Zebrovskyte Fund for international students to commemorate Gabrielė. The fund supports international students who are in an emergency situation through no fault of their own, for example, due to the coronavirus pandemic, wars, natural disasters in their home countries or family crises. With the fund, we are able to help students quickly and unbureaucratically. Since 2014, more than 35,000 euros have been paid to students from 17 different nations.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Gabrielė’s death, the Senate of the University of Mannheim held a public moment of silence on 27 September 2023 at 2 p.m.
