Cynisca database

The Cynisca database is the first to comprehensively document the role of women in ancient Greek sport. Named after Cynisca of Sparta, the first female Olympic champion, the collection contains original Greek and Latin texts with English translations and commentary. From archaic times to late antiquity, women are examined as athletes, organisers and in the discussion of women's sporting activities. Supplemented by a bibliography, the database invites students, researchers and the general public to delve deeper into the subject.
The database is the result of research projects by Melanie Meaker and Christoph Begass at the Institute of Ancient History at the University of Mannheim. It was conceived by Melanie Meaker and Alexander Meeus, and the collection of sources was carried out by Melanie Meaker and Christoph Begass. The translations and commentaries are by Christoph Begass, Melanie Meaker and Alexander Meeus.
