Description:

The goal of this course is to further familiarize students with questions surrounding international cooperation. The focus lies on approaching international cooperation from a “two-level” perspective, in which governments are situated between national and international actors. Initially, we will develop an understanding of Putnam's two-level game and look at the bargains that take place on an international and on a national level. Subsequently, we will try to answer questions revolving around the reasons for delegating to international organizations or why there is variation in the design of international organizations.

The 14 sessions of this course are structured in three blocks. First, we will discuss the “two-level game” as a theoretical foundation of scholarship on international cooperation. Then we will cover, in-depth, the domestic level. Finally, we will look at some of the results of international bargains, try to answer questions of institutional design and try to figure out whether the cause of cooperation failure is to be located on the national or the international level.

Psychological Aspects of International Politics: The Issue of Affective Polarisation

Affective polarisation, the growing tendency to dislike and distrust people associated with ‘the other party’, has important implications for understanding current trends in party competition in the United States (Iyengar et al., 2019; Lenz, 2013). More general, affective polarisation is associated with a diverse range of political and ‘non-political’ attitudes and behaviour such as party preferences, voting choices or the evaluation of job applicants (Druckman & Levendusky, 2019; Iyengar et al., 2019). While most research on affective polarisation previously has been conducted in the context of the two-party system of the United Stated, contemporary research increasingly also focusses on affective polarisation in (European) multi-party systems (Reiljan, 2020; Wagner, 2021). In this seminar we will systematically engage with the theoretical (psychological) foundations of affective polarisation before we turn to examine empirical studies on the implications of affective polarisation around the world.

The Politics of Integration and Disintegration
After a long period of integration with a transfer of more policy competences from the national to the supranational level, the accession of new member states, and the development of the institutional structure, the rise of Euroskeptic parties, negative referendums, and declining public support with “My population First” indicate a trend toward disintegration. In this seminar, we will study the scientific literature on integration and disintegration.

General:
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the course will be held online via Zoom. Should there be any changes to this policy you will be informed immediately. The course language is English.

Sessions: Every course session will have a similar structure. In the first session, we will allocate research papers and organize their presentation during the course (20-minutes presentations). While these papers cover the sessions 4 to 12, we will commonly prepare sessions 2 and 3 (coursework). While all participants have to prepare the listed article for sessions 2–12 (coursework), this article only serves as a guideline for those who present their paper. In addition to this article, their presentation reflects the “state of the art”, i.e., the literature that reflects existing research on the respective topic.

E-Mail Correspondence: Please make sure to check your university-email address inbox regularly otherwise you might miss important news and updates regarding this class. When emailing, please make sure to ask a specific question.

Attendance: Even though attendance in lectures and seminars is not mandatory, participation in the discussions of the Zoom-sessions is required.

Late Work Policy: In general, I will not allow extensions on any of the assessments. Start early with them, so you do not run out of them when the deadline approaches. However, should you find yourself in a situation which hinders you from turning something in on time, let me know as soon as you can and not on the day the task is due or afterwards. We will work together to come up with a solution.

Technology Policy: If you do not have access to an electronic device that allows you to participate appropriately, please let me know as soon as possible and we will find a solution. As you surely know, cell phones and computers can tend to obstruct attention when used inappropriately. I suggest responsibly using technology during the Zoom sessions. Hence, your laptop/tablet should only be used for note-taking and retrieving and reviewing papers where necessary.

Cheating and Plagiarism: In science, plagiarism is sanctioned as it violates property rights. Plagiarising will thus lead to failing the course or to expulsion from the University of Mannheim. All submissions will be checked for plagiarism using the Urkund-Software.

Assessment

Grading Policy: The examination regulations state that course assessment consists of two components: coursework (Studienleistungen) and examinations (Prüfungsleistungen). Coursework is graded as pass/fail and is defined as preliminary required (Vorleistung) before you can be admitted to the examination, which concerns the evaluation of your paper. Nonaccomplishment or failure of successful completion of the coursework leads to an exclusion from the paper evaluation consequently to failure of this course. The grading is on a scale from 1.0 (very good) to 5.0 (not satisfactory, fail) and will be the grade for the entire course (coursework and paper). Every assessment will have a dedicated assessment folder on ILIAS where you can upload your work.

Weekly Readings and Discussion Questions: Prior to each session, you are expected to prepare the papers assigned, see ‘Course Structure’ (see Syllabus in Ilias Group). You are required to submit one discussion question per paper via email to the presentator no later than the afternoon prior to the session, i.e., TUESDAYS, 18.00 hrs. Please note, that you do not need to send discussion questions if you are giving a presentation in the upcoming session.

Presentations: Each of you is required to give a 20-minutes presentation on one of the papers listed in the ‘Course Structure’ section below. Papers will be allocated during our first session. Presentations must include a slide-show, created with Power Point or suitable alternatives. Slide-shows must be submitted via email no later than the afternoon prior to the session, i.e., TUESDAY, 18.00 hrs. Presentations must include the following features:

Most importantly, present the rough structure of the paper together with short summaries of the main information provided in section. This should make up the longest part of your presentation.
Find an alternative title to the paper that nicely captures the paper’s gist.
Engage with the first author of the paper and present some background information on them, such as, at which institution do they work? Which extramural affiliations do they have? What is their main research are? Since when do they research affective polarisation?
Take it personal. What did you like about the paper? What bothered you? You may answer these questions with regard to all aspects of the paper. Did you like the topic? Did you find the research method appropriate? Do you agree with the conclusions? Did the authors use certain language that bothered you?

Term Paper: The term paper (length: 10–15 pages, excl. figures, tables, references and appendix; font: Times New Roman or equivalent; font-size: 12pt; double spacing; margins: 2.5cm) should focus on the topic addressed and the state of the art. In doing so, you are expected to search for other articles and to summarize their contribution, i.e., in terms of theory, method, findings. The final term paper will have to include an introduction, a methods/research design and an analysis section as well as a conclusion/discussion of your topic. Ideally, this paper should be considered a trial-run for your BA-Thesis. If you feel like you need help with finding or developing a topic or research question, please make an appointment. Term papers have to be handed no later than TBA. You need to hand in an electronic copy of your term paper (pdf-upload via ILIAS including all additional materials). In addition, you have to hand in a paper copy including the statutory declaration. Only after I have received the paper copy, I will be able to enter your grade. Should you fail to submit a term paper by the above-mentioned deadline or submit an insufficient term paper, you will receive the grade 5.0 (not satisfactory, fail). Please note that it is not possible to retake the term paper on its own. It is part of the overall assessment (which includes the coursework), which can only be retaken in its entirety in one of the following semesters.

Women in European Parliaments

Women are underrepresented in many parliaments across Europe. While the share of women has increased over the last decades, substantial differences remain between countries. In this course, we examine which factors determine the representation of women in parliaments in Europe. What shapes women’s ways into parliament? Which activities do female legislators engage in once they have been elected – and how might this differ from their male colleagues? And what is the effect of women’s presence in parliament?
This seminar begins with an introduction to the relevant theories, concepts and forms of representation as well as resources for studying the representation of women. We will then look at how political institutions, such as the electoral and party systems, affect the number of women in parliaments. Finally, we will look at the behaviour and actions of female parliamentarians and the role of other actors in promoting female representation.

Besides familiarizing students with empirical research in political science and gender studies as well as the research designs and methods political scientists have used to address these topics, this course will encourage students to critically discuss and evaluate the literature and to develop and answer their own empirical research question. To facilitate this process, this course supports students in developing their academic writing skills. Students will also have the opportunity to present their research proposals and receive written feedback from a fellow student and the instructor.

gesellschaftlich relevanten Phänomenen ist eine der zentralen Entwicklungen in vielen etablierten
Demokratien in den vergangenen Jahr(zehnt)en. Zu den prominentesten Beispielen dieser Entwicklung
zählen insbesondere die Wahl Donald Trumps zum US Präsidenten sowie das Brexit‐Referendum in
Großbritannien, aber auch der generell zunehmende Erfolg populistischer Parteien und Politiker:innen
in vielen Ländern Europas und der restlichen Welt. Diese Entwicklung basiert auf einer grundlegenden
Ablehnung der Bürger:innen gegenüber der gegenwärtigen Praxis und Umsetzung liberaler
Demokratie, welche in ihrem Kern auf eine fundamentale Repräsentationskrise moderner
demokratischer Systeme hindeutet. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, welche
Auswirkungen die zunehmende Verbreitung und Unterstützung von Populismus und populistischen

Democracy is rule by the people. But what if the citizens of a democratic society have grown tired of governing themselves? Likewise, can democracies emerge even when their citizens are not ready for this system of governance? What does it mean to be ready for democracy? Looking at the role of ordinary citizens, this advanced undergraduate seminar examines the societal prerequisites of democracy. One element of the seminar is to discuss what you can and should do as an individual citizen to support democracy. The main focus of this seminar lies on the engagement with theoretical and empirical literature on the societal prerequisites of democracy. Against the backdrop of current trends of democratic backsliding, we will discuss classical and contemporary studies on the role of ordinary citizens in processes of democratization and democratic deconsolidation. In the term papers participants will empirically investigate a theoretically or societally relevant question on the societal prerequisites of democracy for which prior experience with statistical software and prior knowledge of statistics and research designs are necessary.

Die Wahl der politischen Herrschaftsträger ist die zentrale Institution der repräsentativen Demokratie – der einzige Moment, in dem die Bürger selbst unmittelbar den politischen Kurs des Gemeinwesens bestimmen. Dementsprechend ist die Frage, aus welchen Gründen sich Wähler für bestimmte Parteien entscheiden und wie sie zu diesen Entscheidungen gelangen, eines der am intensivsten untersuchten Forschungsprobleme der politiksoziologischen Demokratieforschung. Das Seminar beschäftigt sich mit zentralen Forschungsfeldern der empirischen Wahlforschung, erörtert die wichtigsten Theorieansätze und diskutiert empirische Forschungsergebnisse. Behandelt werden folgende Themenkomplexe: (a) die Bedeutung langfristiger Faktoren wie soziale Gruppen, affektive Parteibindungen und ideologische Grundorientierungen sowie (b) kurzfristiger Faktoren wie politische Sachfragen und Kandidaten für das Wählerverhalten; (c) der Einfluss des Wahlkampfes, der Massenmedien sowie sozialer Netzwerke auf Wahlentscheidungen; (d) psychologische Prozesse bei der Entscheidungsbildung. Demokratie lebt von Beteiligung der Bürger:innen. Wahlen haben dabei eine zentrale Funktion: Macht wird von den Bürger:innen an das Parlament und schließlich an die Regierung delegiert. Doch über diese konventionelle Form der Beteiligung hinaus gibt es weitere, diverse Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten, die gerade in den letzten Jahren mit einer sich abzeichnenden gesellschaftlichen Polarisierung und Fragmentierung eine immer größere Bedeutung einnehmen: Online-Partizipationsformen wie Petitionen, direktdemokratische Beteiligung in Referenden oder soziale Bewegungen wie „Fridays for Future“. Dieser Kurs geht der Frage nach, welche (sich wandelnde) Rolle politische Partizipation für die repräsentative Demokratie hat und welche Spannungsfelder sich daraus für etablierte politische Institutionen und Akteure ergeben. Diese Frage wird in drei größeren Themenblöcken beleuchtet:

I) Theoretische Grundlagen und Formen von Partizipation: Wie lässt sich Partizipation demokratietheoretisch einordnen? Was ist etwa die Rolle partizipatorischer und deliberativer Demokratiekonzepte und (wie) stehen diese im Konflikt mit anderen normativen Idealen? Im Anschluss geht es darum, unterschiedliche Formen von Partizipation abzugrenzen: Wie lässt sich Partizipation typologisieren? Gibt es einen Bedeutungsverlust konventioneller Formen der Beteiligung zugunsten nicht-konventioneller Partizipation? Auch stellt sich im ersten Block die Frage nach der Operationalisierung und Messung von Partizipation – und damit verbundenen Herausforderungen.

II) Gründe von (Nicht-)Partizipation: Wer beteiligt sich (nicht)? Wie (un)gleich ist Partizipation? Wie unterscheidet sich die Beteiligung an verschiedenen Partizipationsformen – u.a. in Abhängigkeit von politisch-kulturellen und institutionellen Faktoren?

III) Folgen von (Nicht-)Partizipation: Welchen Einfluss haben unterschiedliche Formen der Beteiligung auf politische Prozesse und Entscheidungen? Welche Chancen und Risiken bergen nicht-konventionelle Formen der Beteiligung, etwa in Form von Repräsentation marginalisierter Interessen oder sozialer Ungerechtigkeit? Erhöht (de jure und de facto) Partizipation die Legitimität eines politischen Systems?

Zur Vorbereitung auf die Sitzung lesen die Studierenden 1–2 Grundlagentexte und/oder empirisch-vergleichende Studien, die gemeinsam im Kurs diskutiert werden.

Ziel des Kurses ist es, bereits vorhandenen theoretische und analytische Fähigkeiten im Bereich der Vergleichenden Regierungslehre und darüber hinaus zu erweitern. Der Kurs vermittelt ein vertiefendes Verständnis zur normativen Einordnung, Konzeptspezifikation und Operationalisierung von politischer Partizipation (Block I) und zeigt eine kausale Perspektive im Hinblick auf Fragen nach den Gründen und Folgen von Partizipation auf (Block II/III). Am Ende des Kurses sind die Studierenden in der Lage, eine eigene Forschungsfrage zum Thema politische Partizipation zu formulieren und durch die Entwicklung eines theoretischen Arguments und Durchführung empirischer Analysen zu beantworten.

This course introduces students to theories and methods for explaining how democratic political systems emerge, and how they fail. Next to a discussion of how to define and measure „democracy“ and its counterpart „autocracy“, we will focus on the questions of why countries transition from autocracy to democracy, or take the reverse path, when democracy decays or backslides into autocracy. The course considers a wide variety of different explanations for these transitions, including levels of economic development and religious as well as the role of social media. We will also spend some time discussing recent challenges to democracy such as polarization, populism, and threats to free speech. What role does gender and sexuality play in international relations? What do feminist and queer perspectives contribute to the study of IR? This course introduces students to theories and methods for tackling questions at the intersection of gender, sexuality and international relations. Next to an introduction to queer and feminist IR theories, the course will focus in particular on their perspective on security, violence, and the pursuit of peace. In doing so, the course will consider a wide variety of studies on sexual- and gender-based violence in civil wars as well as transnational LGBTQIA+ activism and advocacy. The second part of the seminar will take the form of mini-projects in which the students are expected to work together on possible empirical applications of queer and feminist IR theories. Here, the course will place great emphasis on the practice of quantitative political research in the context of IR.

Introduction to International Cooperation

The goal of this class is to introduce the varying forms and causes of international cooperation. By focusing on theories of cooperation, students will learn to critically assess cooperative agreements. By introducing empirical research on different types of cooperation, students will familiarize themselves with a broad range of cooperative arrangements. Empirically, this class relies on case-studies of specific agreements and arenas as well as large-N quantitative studies. Thereby, exposing students repeatedly to key methods of scholarship about international relations.

The 14 sessions of this course are structured in two blocks. First, we will discuss the theoretical foundations of scholarship on international cooperation. This course is a survey and introduction of the core concepts and theories of international political economy with a focus on how international trade affects domestic politics in Western democracies. The course is divided into three sections. The first one is designed to familiarize you with theoretical perspectives, methods of analysis, and concepts widely used in the study of international political economy. We want to get an overview of what scholars of international political economy study, how they define globalization, and who the winners and losers of trade liberalization are. In diesem Proseminar werden vier grundlegende Werke der politischen Wahl- und Einstellungsforschung ausführlich gelesen und besprochen. Obwohl ein Großteil der Werke bereits über 50 Jahre alt ist, ist ihr intellektueller und konzeptioneller Einfluss in der Wahlforschung bis heute bemerkenswert stark. Fast jeder aktuelle Aufsatz in diesem Forschungsbereich steht in Tradition mindestens einer dieser Werke.

Das Proseminar verfolgt mehrere Ziele. Zum einen soll ein Überblick über die verschiedenen Ansätze der empirischen Wahlforschung vermittelt werden. Hierbei werden grundsätzliche Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der Werke herausgearbeitet. Der hauptsächliche Lernerfolg dieses Proseminar liegt im kritischen Lesen und Verstehen empirischer Texte unter Berücksichtigung des jeweiligen theoretischen und konzeptuellen Kontexts. Political commentators, politicians, and social scientists alike attest Western societies increasing levels of political polarization: citizens not only seem to fundamentally disagree over political issues, but increasingly distrust and dislike supporters of opposing parties. A central cause of different forms of polarization is seen in political communication processes: The provision of political information as well as the way that citizens select and process this information can both amplify and mitigate political polarization. The first aim of the seminar is for students to arrive at a solid understanding of the different conceptualizations of political polarization and to get a grasp of the evolution of the research field as a whole. We will furthermore engage with contemporary scholarly research and discuss empirical approaches to measuring different forms of political polarization. The second aim of the seminar is for students to understand the different mechanisms through which the media, politicians, and fellow citizens can shape people’s political views. Anschließend widmen wir uns den Determinanten politische Partizipation. Hierbei wird insbesondere auf das Civic Voluntarism Model (Verba et. al. 1995), sowie institutionelle Einflussfaktoren eingegangen. People's ideology has played an important role since the first democratic movements of the 19th century. Political ideologies, but also belief systems, influence how people perceive their political environment and act politically. Recently, the focus seems to be shifting more towards identities. Identity politics in particular is increasingly becoming an issue of public and scientific debate. This seminar will explore political ideology and identity, their differences and similarities, as well as their origins and consequences. First, the seminar will focus on questions such as what are political belief systems, and is ideology different from them? We will then turn to conceptualizations and theoretical frameworks on political identity and its shapes. Contemporary political issues such as climate change, migration, or specific identity politics will eventually be considered to critically examine the interplay of ideology and identity and their consequences. Classical theoretical literature will be covered throughout the semester, but recent developments in political attitudes and behavioural research will also be addressed.

Especially in the field of International Relations (IR) political scientists frequently must invest major efforts in the pre-processing of data before turning to empirical analyses. This is because data often stems from various sources with different time- and data-formats as well as mixed labeling of observations. Researchers unfamiliar with these and other issues as well as mechanisms to solve them are easily overwhelmed by the necessary steps of data preparation. In this course you 1.) get to know major datasets in the area of conflict studies and their peculiarities, 2.) become acquainted to the major obstacles in the pre-processing of data in the field of IR, and 3.) learn how to address these issues as well as apply the gained knowledge to new data-processing problems in IR and beyond. Specifically, the course addresses problems such as the correct identification of data-formats, the harmonization of observation-identifiers, the merging of datasets, and others.

All data-preparation tasks are done in Stata! While the theoretical principles of pre-processing are similar to other statistical software applications, basic knowledge in Stata is highly recommended (i.e. how to open datasets, generate variables, work with if-commands, etc.). As there will be no anew introduction into the software language, students that have not worked with Stata in a while are advised to get familiar with the respective commands again before the course starts.

Funktionieren und Fortbestehen moderner Demokratien förderlicher als blindes Vertrauen. Dennoch
gilt ein Mindestmaß an politischem Vertrauen als notwendige Bedingung für die Erlangung kollektiver
Ziele auf effizientem Wege. Politisches Vertrauen verbindet die Bürger:innen mit den Institutionen,
welche ihre Interessen repräsentieren sollen, und erweitert auf diese Weise die Legitimität und Effizienz
demokratischen Regierens. Vor diesem Hintergrund verfolgt die Übung zwei Ziele: In einem ersten,
theoretischen Teil soll geklärt werden, was politisches Vertrauen ist und welche Rolle es im Hinblick
auf die Funktionsfähigkeit demokratischer Systeme einnimmt. In diesem Zusammenhang sollen
alternative Erklärungsansätze für das politische Vertrauen der Bürger:innen diskutiert und das
Konzept des politischen Vertrauens in Bezug zu anderen Themenkomplexen wie Sozialkapital,
Werte(wandel), ökonomische Performanz sowie politische Partizipation gesetzt werden. Im zweiten
Teil der Übung sollen die Teilnehmer:innen während praktischer Sitzungen versuchen, ausgewählte
empirische Analysen der zuvor diskutierten Literatur eigenständig zu replizieren und zu erweitern.
Hierbei wird insbesondere auf europäisch vergleichende Datensätze (European Social Survey,
European Values Study, Eurobarometer) zurückgegriffen. Die von den Teilnehmer:innen zu
erbringende Prüfungsleistung besteht letztlich im Verfassen eines „Replication Reportsʺ, welcher die
zentralen Ergebnisse der Replikationsstudien sowie der weiterführenden Analysen dokumentiert und
zusammenfasst.

In dieser praxisorientierten Übung wird die selbstständige Anwendung statistischer Verfahren erlernt, um gegenwärtige Fragen der Wahlforschung zu untersuchen. Warum gehen Menschen wählen, oder eben nicht? Warum kann gerade die AfD so viele ehemalige Nichtwähler für sich mobilisieren? Und sollten uninformierte Wähler eigentlich überhaupt wählen gehen? Mit diesen und ähnlichen Fragen setzen wir uns auf der Grundlage aktueller Forschungsliteratur kritisch auseinander. Studierende lernen, die statistischen Analysen dieser Literatur zu verstehen, zu interpretieren und durch eigene Replikationen zu überprüfen. Im Zentrum steht die selbstständige Durchführung von empirischen Analysen mit Hilfe des Statistikprogramms Stata. In den ersten vier Sitzungen werden zunächst grundlegende Stata-Befehle zur Datenmodifikation und -analyse, sowie die korrekte Interpretation von Regressionsergebnissen wiederholt. In den folgenden Sitzungen stehen die Auseinandersetzung und Replikation aktueller Forschungsergebnisse zu Demokratie, Populismus und Polarisierung im Vordergrund. In jeder Sitzung diskutieren wir die theoretische Argumentation eines Aufsatzes aus der einschlägigen Forschungsliteratur. Wir stellen uns die Frage, inwieweit das Studiendesign zur Beantwortung der untersuchten Forschungsfrage geeignet ist und ob die von den Autoren gezogenen Schlussfolgerungen zulässig sind. Anschließend replizieren die Studierenden die empirische Analyse des Aufsatzes in Stata. In der Seminararbeit replizieren die Studierenden eigenständig einen Forschungsaufsatz mit aktuellen Daten, begründen ihre Analyseentscheidungen und interpretieren die empirischen Befunde.

The course introduces students to data visualization techniques for comparative politics taking a very practical approach using the R programming language. At the beginning of the course, you will be guided into the programming language by learning the basics of data management, generating summary statistics and simple visualizations. On this basis, we will then deal with large quantities of data – covering temporal, spatial and relational dimensions – and more complex data visualizations such as maps, interactive plots or videos.
The goal of this course is to equip the students with the necessary skills to collect large quantities of data, to clean and arrange datasets, to explore and understand patterns of data, and to communicate these patterns and findings by visualizations. In addition, learning to produce effective graphs from own data is a great way to a better understanding of graphs – as well as their strengths or shortcomings – presented in research journals or the media.

Linear regression models are often not adequate to study the comparison of political systems and its effects on, e.g., political behaviour. Endogeneity, rare events, categorical dependent variables, and predictors that are situated on both the individual and country level require special attention in our regression design. In this course, we’ll look at four commonly used regression models that are suitable to study typical question formats in comparative research: multilevel regression models, discrete choice models, regression discontinuity designs, and panel regressions. We’ll discuss when and when not to apply each design, what type of data is required, and what sort of theoretical questions can be addressed by each design. We’ll work through examples in R and replicate seminal works.

The first session of the seminar will take place online via Zoom. There we will discuss which sessions will take place in person, if possible.

Inhalt: Personen beantworten eine einzige Frage; ihre Beziehungsqualität verbessert sich über Wochen. Die britische Regierung verändert den Text der Zahlungserinnerung für die Steuer; die Zahlungsquote steigt um 15%.
Das sind nur ein paar Beispiele einer Reihe von Studien, die dem Nudging und den Wise Interventions zugeordnet werden. Nudging und Wise Interventions fokussieren sich auf die Veränderung von spezifischen psychologischen Prozessen und können somit mit wenig Aufwand Veränderungen im Erleben und Verhalten von Personen erreichen.
Im Seminar wird der Forschungsstand zu Wise Interventions und zum Nudging beleuchtet. Dabei werden aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten zu spezifischen Nudges und Wise Interventions im Vordergrund stehen.

Die (Weiter-)Entwicklung von Theorien ist ein fundamentaler Bestandteil der Wissenschaft. Idealerweise helfen uns Theorien dabei, bestimmte Ereignisse und Phänomene besser zu verstehen. Durch die Beschreibung von kausalen Mechanismen zeigen Theorien Möglichkeiten auf, um in Phänomene eingreifen und den Verlauf von Ereignissen verändern zu können. Die praktische Anwendung von Theorien zum Lösen von konkreten Problemen wird häufig aber dadurch erschwert, dass die Theorien relativ abstrakt formuliert sind. Im Rahmen des Seminars werden verschiedene sozialpsychologische Theorien näher beleuchtet und Möglichkeiten diskutiert, wie die Theorien zum Lösen konkreter Probleme in unterschiedlichen Kontexten angewandt werden können.

Alterssicherungssysteme regulieren einerseits die Umverteilung zwischen Erwerbstätigen und Rentnern, sowie andererseits innerhalb des individuellen Lebenslaufs. Im ersten Teil des Proseminars wird zunächst der Aufbau der Alterssicherung in Deutschland betrachtet und im internationalen Vergleich eingeordnet. Im Anschluss werden insbesondere Probleme der Alterssicherung vor dem Hintergrund von Lebenslaufsensitivität und exogenen Herausforderungen behandelt. Migration ist nicht erst seit der Grenzöffnung im Herbst 2015 ein immer stärker aufkommendes Thema. Jede vierte Person in Deutschland hat eine Migrationsgeschichte. Für den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt ist ein friedliches und respektvolles Miteinander notwendig. In dem Seminar werden daher Muster der Einstellung und Unterstützung bzw. Ablehnung der Immigration im internationalen Vergleich untersucht. Die Frage wie Einstellungen zu Migration in der Gesellschaft entstehen stehen daher im Fokus. Im Mittelpunkt des ersten Teils steht die Auseinandersetzung mit Klassikern der Migrationseinstellung. Im zweiten Teil wird Migration im Zusammenspiel mit aktueller sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung zu den Wohlfahrtsstaaten beleuchtet. We will study recent sociological literature on the institutional, organizational, and relational foundations of cultural fields and consider research questions that touch upon variations in cultural consumption, movements in cultural fields, and classification of cultural products: How does social background influence our musical taste? Who gets a Nobel Prize, or an Academy Award, and why? How is value constructed in the fashion modeling market? Why do we observe gender inequality in professional careers in cultural industries? Die Vorlesung führt grundlegend in die Verfahren und Anwendungsprobleme der multivariaten Datenanalyse ein. Dabei werden im Wesentlichen die Grundlagen des klassischen linearen Regressionsmodells besprochen. Wir behandeln dabei sowohl die Anwendung von Regressionsverfahren in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung als auch die Grundlagen der Matrixalgebra sowie der statistischen Schatztheorie. Die Vorlesung schließt mit einem kurzen Abriss binarer Entscheidungsmodelle. Die in der Vorlesung vermittelten Kenntnisse werden durch eine begleitende Übung vertieft.

Ziellos und gefühllos – so wäre unser Leben ohne Motivation und Emotion. Diese Vorlesung gibt einen Überblick über die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen, Theorien und empirischen Befunde der Motivations- und Emotionspsychologie. Neben den klassischen Triebtheorien (Freud, Hull) und Lewins Feldtheorie zu Motivkonflikten, wird aus der modernen Motivationspsychologie die explizite und implizite Messung der Big 3 der Motive (Leistung, Macht, Anschluss) sowie die intrinsische Motivation vorgestellt. Abschließend werden Prozesse der Volition, also wie sich Motive über Ziele in Handlung umsetzen, betrachtet. In der Emotionspsychologie werden dimensionale und kategoriale Emotionsmodelle sowie verschiedene Emotionstheorien kontrastiert. Es wird ein Überblick über Methoden der Emotionsinduktion und -messung gegeben. Abschließend werden Aspekte der Emotionsregulation besprochen.

Hintergrund: Derzeit wird häufig das so genannte „postfaktische“ Zeitalter beschworen, in dem Fake News, „Bullshit“ und Verschwörungsmythen Konjunktur haben, angefeuert auch durch die derzeitige Corona-Krise als gesellschaftlicher Stressor. Aber auch in „normalen“ Zeiten glauben weite Teile der Bevölkerung irrationale Dinge, von Esoterik über medizinische Heilslehren bis zu Verschwörungsmythen. Eine Bewegung, die solch vorschnellen Urteilen die kritische Überprüfung entgegenstellt, ist der wissenschaftliche Skeptizismus.

Ziel des Seminars: Das Seminar wird zeigen, welche enorme Bedeutung die Forschung der Kognitionspsychologie für diese Haltung des wissenschaftlichen Skeptizismus hat, da sie vielfältig aufgezeigt hat, welchen Verzerrungen die menschliche Wahrnehmung, das Gedächtnis und das Denken unterliegen. Diese Erkenntnisse können zur „neuropsychologischen Demut“ beitragen, einer Haltung, die uns davor schützt, vorschnell unseren Intuitionen oder Gefühlen zu vertrauen. Wir werden eine Reihe solcher kognitiver Verzerrungen kennenlernen und ihre möglichen Konsequenzen diskutieren. Vertieft werden empirische Arbeiten behandelt, die diese Verzerrungen demonstrieren und empirisch untersuchen. Dabei soll en passant die Forschungsmethodik der Psychologie vermittelt (und diskutiert) werden.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive technique for studying human brain activity. The goal of this block seminar is to provide students an overview about fMR as an essential addition to the toolbox of experimental and clinical psychologists. The seminar includes lectures, hands-on exercises for planning a fMRI study, and a visit to the MRI facility at the Central Institute of Mental Health. At the end of the seminar, students will have a basic understanding of the motivation using fMRI, physics of MRI scanners, MRI safety, principles of experimental designs, and data analysis methods.

Werden wir im Alter vergesslich und hilfsbedürftig oder doch eher unabhängig und weise? Welche Vorstellungen haben jüngere Erwachsene über das Altern und wie verändern sich diese je älter man wird? In diesem Seminar wird zunächst die psychologische Forschung zu Alter(n)sstereotypen aufbereitet. Anschließend betrachten wir Befunde zu tatsächlichen Altersunterschieden in stereotypisierten Funktionsbereichen (z.B. Gedächtnis, Sozialleben) näher und setzen diese mit den vorherrschenden Stereotypen in Beziehung. Dabei ist von besonderem Interesse inwiefern vorherrschende Alter(n)sstereotype die Leistung und Funktionalität älterer Erwachsener und das weitere Altern beeinflussen können.

The development of Theory of Mind is a milestone in child development. It refers to the ability to infer the mental states of others, so other’s beliefs, intents, desires, emotions, knowledge, and so on, including the understanding that others may hold false beliefs and knowledge. In this seminar, we will learn different methods to assess Theory of Mind in infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Connected to this, we will learn about the development of this socio-cognitive ability across the lifespan. Further, we will examine how this ability relates to other cognitive, social, emotional, and moral abilities.
Seminar members are expected to actively participate in the seminar sessions and to give a presentation (based on literature and directions provided by the instructor). All seminar sessions and presentations will be held in English; all literature is in English as well.

Sie bezeichnet die Fähigkeit, die subjektiven Überzeugungen anderer erschließen zu können und dabei auch zu verstehen, dass diese falsch sein können. In diesem Seminar lernen wir verschiedene Methoden zur Messung der Theory of Mind vom Säuglingsalter bis ins hohe Erwachsenenalter kennen und betrachten damit verbunden die Entwicklung dieser sozio-kognitiven Fähigkeit über die Lebensspanne. Verstärkt und beschleunigt durch die Corona-Pandemie verändern Digitalisierung und Virtualisierung Kooperationsbeziehungen und Geschäftsmodelle gleichermaßen. Die Begleitung dieser Veränderungen durch ein professionelles Change Management ist ein wichtiger Erfolgsfaktor. Allerdings sind auch Change Manager von Digitalisierung und Virtualisierung betroffen und gefordert. In diesem Seminar wollen wir die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Chancen für das organisationale Change Management herausarbeiten. Dazu beschäftigen wir uns zunächst mit grundlegenden Konzepten und Methoden des Change Managements und reflektieren deren Anwendung in der Praxis. Dazu werden in Kleingruppen ausgewählte Schwerpunktthemen vertiefend bearbeitet. Dabei besteht die Gelegenheit, Experteninterviews mit erfahrenen Praktikern zu führen. Den Abschluss des Seminars bildet eine virtuelle Ergebnispräsentation der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse.

Seminarbeschreibung: In diesem Seminar erwerben und vertiefen Sie Kenntnisse über die Epidemiologie, Ätiologie, Klassifikation, Diagnostik, sowie Krankheitsverlauf und –prognose von Störungen des Essverhaltens. Folgende Störungsbilder erarbeiten wir uns anhand von aktueller Literatur: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, und Binge Eating Disorder (BED), sowie Adipositas. Sowohl psychische, körperliche, als auch systemische Faktoren, die die Entstehung und Aufrechterhaltung von Störungen des Essverhaltens begünstigen werden besprochen. Evidenzbasierte Interventionsmöglichkeiten werden vor allem am Beispiel der Adipositas diskutiert und Bedingungen für den Behandlungserfolg erarbeitet. Erscheinungsbild, Prävalenz, Ätiologie und Behandlungsstrategien zu den wichtigsten schlafmedizinischen Erkrankungen werden besprochen, z. B. Description:

In diesem Seminar soll ein grundlegendes Verständnis für die Evaluation von pädagogisch-psychologischen Interventionsmaßnahmen hergestellt werden. Darüber hinaus werden Methoden der Individualbewertung thematisiert. Beispielsweise geht es um die Evaluation des Lehr- und Bildungswesen (universitäre Lehrevaluation, nationale und internationale Schulleistungsstudien) sowie um Leistungserfassung und Leistungsrückmeldung im Lernkontext.
