    Description:
    Climate migration

This interdisciplinary, team-taught course examines the complex relationship between climate change and human mobility. It explores how environmental stressors, particularly climate extremes, interact with social, political, economic, and institutional factors to influence migration decisions. Students will analyze both rapid-onset displacement and slower-moving migration trends, considering how structural inequalities, conflict, and governance issues shape outcomes. Special attention is given to the concepts of equity, climate justice, and the legal distinctions between types of mobility, such as forced versus voluntary migration.

The course also investigates the responses of both developing and developed countries to climate-related migration, including adaptation strategies, policy frameworks like the Global Compact for Migration, and the growing challenges of internal displacement. It critically engages with global efforts to address root causes and manage migration flows, while also addressing the emerging impacts of climate change in the Global North. Throughout, the course emphasizes the importance of a nuanced and integrated understanding of mobility, grounded in diverse disciplinary perspectives and real-world policy debates.
As part of the course, students will select a case study to explore in depth. They will deliver an individual presentation on their chosen case to support the development of their final paper and to engage in constructive peer feedback. The course module concludes with the submission of the final paper.

This seminar introduces students to the central debates in judicial politics. We adopt an interdisciplinary perspective by taking law seriously while moving beyond pure doctrinal analysis to study courts as political institutions and judges as political actors. Moreover, we will examine judicial decision-making and power relations within collegial courts and across judicial hierarchies. The seminar introduces theories, research designs, and empirical findings developed primarily in the context of U.S. courts before considering their applicability to other settings. Particular attention is devoted to the European Court of Justice and its role in European legal integration during the final two sessions of the seminar.

    Description:

How do different forms of political violence – such as armed conflict, genocide, repression, or violent institutions – influence  ocieties and individuals in the long term? The objective of this undergraduate seminar is to familiarize students with state-of-the-art academic literature that tries to shed light on how long effects of political violence might last, to whom they might extend,  nd why they persist. We will study the lasting effects of political violence for immediate participants and victims, as well as  ntergenerational effects for subsequent generations, and will investigate a broad range of outcomes such as political or social  ehavior and attitudes, (mental) health, or economic conditions. We will furthermore discuss methodological challenges of  easuring lasting effects and of isolating mechanisms of political violence and conflict. The course is taught in English.

    Description:
What does it mean for a democracy to be “polarized”? This seminar examines polarization as both a contested concept and a political phenomenon, with particular attention to the role of group identity in shaping democratic conflict. We begin by unpacking what polarization actually refers to — ideological, social, affective — and why these distinctions matter. The course then narrows to affective polarization and the social-identity foundations of partisan division, before turning to how partisan divides interact with other identity cleavages such as religion or ethnicity. Empirical work from Europe and beyond grounds the discussion throughout.

    Description:
These days, the greatest threat to democracies around the world is arguably not from outside enemies but rather from within. Democratic backsliding, a process by which democratic norms, rules, and institutions are eroded by the elected leaders themselves, is perhaps the most important and intensely studied topic in political science at the moment. In this seminar, we will discuss the political processes that comprise democratic backsliding and the social factors that facilitate it. We will complete the picture by studying how some democracies have been able to be more resilient to this process than others, and what political researchers have suggested could be done in countries threatened by backsliding to resist it.

    • “Democracy is an ideology of opposition as much as it is one of government” (Shapiro 1996). This seminar will introduce students to the theoretical and normative importance of the concept of opposition as well as its empirical ubiquity in modern democracy. We will draw on classic literature to engage in questions such as what constitutes a successful opposition and whether a country can be considered democratic without a viable opposition. We will then delve into the recently flourishing literature on the behaviour of opposition parties, both in parliament and in the electoral arena.

    Description:
This seminar provides students with an in-depth understanding of key issues in the study of comparative climate politics. Addressing climate change is a major contemporary challenge, and a comparative political science approach can provide a valuable lens through which to examine it. For example, what causes climate change to rise and fall on the political agenda? Why do some countries implement more ambitious climate policies than others? Are there particular reasons for climate action being supported by some voters and politicians, and yet opposed by others? These are among the key issues that this seminar will explore.

This seminar aims to give students an in-depth understanding of the causes of intrastate conflicts or civil wars. We start by looking into theoretical models of intrastate conflict onset. We will analyze, compare, and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of theories and concepts such as ‘greed’, ‘grievance‘, ‘opportunity’, and ‘relative deprivation’. Then we move on to empirical research based on the theories introduced in the seminar and analyze  these theories in the context of particular conflicts. The seminar will also prepare students for writing their final paper and provide the opportunity to take a closer look at the data and empirical methods researchers use when studying intrastate conflicts. Finally, we will have an introduction into working with spatial data and presenting our results in neatly formatted maps. This class will be taught in English.

    Description:

This bachelor seminar introduces students to the empirical study of Chinese politics, combining historical foundations with contemporary political analysis. The course examines the evolution of political authority, governance structures, and state–society relations in China through modern empirical research in political science.

The seminar covers traditional sources of political legitimacy, the organization and internal dynamics of the Chinese Communist Party, and key features of authoritarian governance, including responsiveness, legislative processes, policy-making, and expert consultation. It further addresses mass politics and information control, focusing on political participation, ideology, media regulation, and censorship.

The course takes a region-focused approach to Chinese domestic politics and governance. Students primarily interested in international relations topics such as foreign policy, security, or interstate relations may wish to consider whether this focus aligns with their expectations.

The objective of this course is to introduce students to central areas of international relations research through a gender lens. We will survey key topics such as international determinants of gender inequality, gendered norms of protection, cooperation and violence, or the role of gender in political leadership, diplomacy, and political violence. Furthermore, we will discuss potential implications of “gender-blindness” in quantitative political science research and related issues of gender-sensitive measurement and data collection. Throughout the course, particular emphasis will be on familiarizing students with the foundations of academic writing and independent research. After completing this course, students will be able to i) critically assess and reflect potentials and pitfalls of the gender and IR literature, and ii) to identify and sketch out a research project within the broad area of gender and IR.

    Description:
How do international organizations work to achieve economic and political consensus? What is the role of human rights in conflicts? And why do states continue to violate them through repression? This course begins with the basic concepts of International Relations to provide an introductory overview of human rights. The goal is to provide insight into the importance of these principles in international politics, the role of governmental institutions, the United Nations, and civil society, and to reflect on how these rights are violated or protected. During the seminar, we will examine concrete cases of violations and discuss theoretical definitions of human rights, such as those associated with international conventions, and the rights and freedoms of individuals and minorities, including women, refugees, and immigrants. The seminar is an introduction to basic social, legal, and political issues and how they operate in a global context. Students will be encouraged to think critically and identify challenges and key questions in the field that they can apply to their projects. The course will be taught in English.

    Description:

Research on European integration distinguishes between the causes and consequences of the institutional choices for European integration. In the current debate, proponents of liberal intergovernmentalism and differentiated integration argue that the political leaders of the member states are able to design an effective institutional framework for EU policy-making, while postfunctionalists contend that an institutional mismatch exists between supranational form and function. This course introduces into the theories and methodologies about the causes and consequences of the institutional choices and their implications for EU policy-making. To understand research on the dynamics of European integration, students should have interest in analytical theory and methodology.

The course aims to introduce into

    • basic literature in European integration;
    • research design and tools for the analysis of European integration.

Causes of Armed Conflict – Proseminar in International Relations

In the course module “Causes of Armed Conflict”, we will address questions relating to the onset and development of armed conflict within and between states. Causes of armed conflict and processes of escalation are discussed in light of both theoretical and empirical insights. This section focuses specifically on the decisions leading to the use of force over incompatibilities. These dynamics are explored from different theoretical perspectives and at various levels of analysis, including individual and group-level theories, as well as decision-making within and between groups and states.

The first part of the module is primarily devoted to an introduction and in-depth assessment of key structural factors related to the causes of armed conflict. Each student is encouraged to select an armed conflict for analysis and begin preparing by reading about their case and applying the theoretical concepts introduced in the literature.

As part of this preparation, students will deliver an individual presentation on their selected conflict case. These presentations are designed to support the development of the final paper and provide an opportunity for students to give and receive constructive peer feedback.
The second part of the course focuses on theories and literature dealing with escalation processes of armed conflict. Toward the end of the course, we offer a question-and-answer (Q&A) workshop, where students, guided by the instructor, can constructively discuss challenges, share experiences, and support one another in the writing process.

The course module concludes with the submission of the final paper.

    Description:
How does our personality shape the way we think about politics? To what extent is political behavior rooted in where and how we grow up? What role do group orientations and social structures play in attitude formation and voting decisions?
In this proseminar, we study key psychological and structural determinants of political behavior. While the proseminar’s focus is on discussing recent papers, we cover fundamental paradigms in the very beginning to ensure that everyone is on the same page. The course is split into four blocks. In the first block, we learn about the major schools of thought and the theoretical approaches they offer (Columbia School, Michigan School, Rational Choice Theory). The other parts each take a different perspective on explaining how people engage with the political sphere. In the second block, we examine personality traits, which are fundamental predispositions that remain largely stable over one’s lifetime. The third block moves from psychological explanations to formative influences, including socio-demographic factors and political socialization processes. Lastly, we focus on group orientations and the development of social identities as more immediate explanations of political behavior. The goal for students is to gain insights into both fundamental and recent developments in political sociology. Alongside the content, students learn how to approach writing a term paper and how to critically engage with scientific literature.

    Description:
This seminar focuses on the topics of political communication and party competition from a comparative perspective. In each session, we will explore theories of party competition and examine how parties employ various communication strategies in political competition. For example, we will discuss how parties attempt to persuade voters by highlighting certain issues or positioning themselves on political questions, how they attempt to discredit their political opponents through negative campaigning, and how they engage in competition through personalization. To this end, students will read empirical studies on party competition, which will form the basis for lectures and discussions in the course. As part of the course, students will also have the opportunity to conduct a sample content analysis of the 2025 federal election and test individual theories discussed. The course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of political parties and their communication strategies. By combining theoretical concepts, empirical research, and practical application, students can develop their analytical skills and deepen their understanding using concrete examples from the political world.

    Public attitudes to European integration
In Europe the issue of regional integration has long been one that has dominated relationships between states. But in recent decades the attitudes of citizens to European integration have played an increasingly important role, influencing electoral behaviour, party systems and affecting politics in a myriad of ways. On this course we will focus on how citizens form attitudes to European integration and how these attitudes influence politics. Through the prism of this important issue, we will investigate many of the key themes of political sociology, including relations between elites and mass publics, identity, partisanship, communication, economic influences and many others. We will concentrate on the European Union as a social and political entity and how understanding public opinion to European integration helps us understand politics and policy making at the national, supra-national and sub-national levels.

    Übung: Conflict and Event Data

The objective of this course is to introduce students to fundamental statistical concepts and programming skills necessary for analyzing event-based data in the context of conflict research and international relations. The course focuses on working with conflict and protest event data, providing students with the tools to engage with real-world datasets that capture political violence, demonstrations, riots, and other forms of collective action.

Using a hands-on approach, students will learn the R programming language. Throughout the course, students will work with prominent event datasets such as ACLED and UCDP-GED, among others.

Participants will follow the full pipeline of statistical analysis: from preprocessing raw event data, to (visually) exploring temporal and spatial patterns of events, to estimating statistical models, visualizing results, and interpreting findings within the context of substantive research questions. Emphasis is placed on practical applications in understanding conflict trends, protest dynamics, and broader patterns of political instability.

The course is designed for students interested in empirical research in peace and conflict studies, political violence, and international affairs. The course is taught in English.

    Description:
This course introduces students to quantitative research methods in international relations and European integration using modern tools for scientific programming and reproducible research. Students will learn how to analyze and visualize data in R, document their work using Quarto, and manage their projects efficiently using Git and GitHub. These tools enable students to follow state-of-the-art workflows for transparent, collaborative, and well-organized empirical research. All work will be conducted in Positron, an integrated development environment for data science.

The course is organized in three blocks.
Part I — Scientific Programming Fundamentals builds a foundation in R, the tidyverse, data visualization with ggplot2, and reproducible workflows withQuarto and Git.
Part II — The Logic of Bayesian Inference introduces probability, Bayes' theorem, and the idea of updating beliefs with evidence, alongside the computational machinery (MCMC via brms) that makes modern Bayesian modelling practical.
Part III — Applied Data Analysis brings these threads together, moving from bivariateand multivariate regression through models for binary outcomes to multilevel models with partial pooling, all within a unified Bayesian workflow.

    Description:
In this tutorial, we will learn how to independently apply statistical methods to analyse political attitudes and voting behaviours by focusing primarily on the German context. The focus of this tutorial is on the independent implementation of empirical analyses using the statistical program R.

We will kick off the semester by getting familiar with the statistical program R, covering the basics of data modifications and analysis, and we will briefly revisit the interpretation of regression results. In the subsequent sessions, we will concentrate on analysing and replicating current research on political attitudes and electoral behaviour. This includes discussing study designs, assessing their suitability for addressing the underlying research questions, and evaluating the conclusions drawn by the authors. Do we reach the same conclusions? Are there alternative explanations for the results? We will then replicate the analysis in R.

For the term paper, students will independently replicate a research paper using R, justifying their analytical choices, and interpreting the empirical findings.
The tutorial will be held in English. The term paper can be written in English or German.

    Description:

    Description:
Contemporary welfare states are often understood to be under a dual pressure. On the one hand, global economic transformations in recent decades have put welfare states under immense budgetary strain. On the other hand, there remains the political and public demand for a welfare state to provide adequate protection against social risks. This tension become especially apparent during moments of crisis. For instance, during an economic recession, labor market protection and social assistance can lower the risk of job loss and poverty, but these programs also strain public finances as demand for them increases. In this seminar we will study how welfare states respond to and change over crises. We will examine how they help to mitigate economic crises, absorb the employment shock, and adapt to new social risks. In turn, we will analyze how crisis moments drive changes to social policy frameworks. Case studies will include historical economic crises, as well as more recent examples such as the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic with a comparative focus across Europe and beyond.

    Description:
Almost everyone grows up in a family. But not everyone grows up with a father and mother or with siblings. So what defines a family? Who belongs to a family, and who doesn’t? What roles does a family play in our society? How does a family come into being, and why can it fall apart? How has the concept of family changed over time? In this seminar, we will explore and discuss these questions. We will discuss why some people choose to start a family and have children while others do not. We will analyze the formative power that family can have and the extent to which one is (or is not) influenced by it. Theoretical explanations and empirical findings will be discussed based on weekly readings. As a course requirement, at the end of the seminar, students are expected to develop their own empirical research questions using selected datasets (including the Campus-file from the family demographic panel FReDA) and produce a short empirical research paper.

    Description:

    Description:

    Description:

    Description:

    Description:

    Description:
Trust is among the most important factors in human life. Present to some degree in all human interaction, it encompasses almost all domains of society and plays, for example, a key role in economic exchange and politics. Although behavioral research has revealed several insights into the nature of trust (including its antecedents and consequences), recent research has begun to study this topic from a neurobiological perspective to gain a deeper understanding. The seminar provides an interdisciplinary exploration of neurobiological investigations into interpersonal trust conducted at different levels of analysis: genes, endocrinology, the brain, and behavior. The seminar further explores the impairment of trust due to brain disorders or psychopathologies (e.g., psychosis, borderline personality disorder).

    Description:

    Wednesday  (weekly) 09.09.2026 – 09.12.202608:30 – 10:00A1.01–08 Seminarraum; Willy-Brandt-Platz 1
    Description:
Background: Currently, people often refer to the so‑called “post-truth” era, in which fake news, “bullshit,” and conspiracy myths are widespread. Large parts of the population believe irrational ideas, ranging from esoteric beliefs and medical miracle cures to conspiracy myths. A movement that counters such hasty judgments with critical examination is scientific skepticism.

Objective of the seminar: The seminar will demonstrate the enormous importance of cognitive psychology research for the attitude of scientific skepticism. Cognitive psychology has shown the biases to which human perception, memory, and thinking are subject. These findings can contribute to “neuropsychological humility,” an attitude that protects us from trusting our intuitions or feelings too quickly. We will get to know a number of such cognitive biases and discuss their possible consequences. Empirical studies that demonstrate and investigate these biases will be covered in depth. At the same time, the methodology of psychological research will be taught (and discussed).

    Description:
How do emotional abilities (e.g. emotion regulation) change over the life span? What are the disorders of this emotional development? To what extent do younger and older adults differ in their emotional-cognitive processing (keyword: positivity effect)? To what extent do older and younger people enter into different emotional relationships (friendships, partnerships)? In this seminar we will take a closer look at all these questions, taking into account established findings as well as the latest research results.

The seminar will be held in person and will not be recorded. Active participation in the seminar sessions (discussions, small group assignments) is encouraged.

Are some people just born happy? Can we intervene to improve life satisfaction? Do personality traits change over time? The impact of personality traits on well-being is a highly active research field, bolstered by public fascination with personality traits, such as extraversion. In this seminar we will begin to unpick the complex relationships between personality traits, culture, income, job satisfaction, emotion regulation, and various indicators of well-being. We will also focus on critically exploring the methods used in this line of research, different theoretical perspectives, the ongoing research challenges, and future directions.

Some people believe hypnosis is real, others think it’s a myth. Some people are susceptible to hypnotic instruction and others not. In this seminar we will trace the fascinating history of the scientific study of Hypnosis in Social Psychology. A niche field fraught with debate and filled with clever experiments designed to prove the existence of hypnosis, and equally clever experiments designed to disprove it. What exactly hypnosis is and how it works will be explored collaboratively in class with reference to prominent theories in Social Psychology. Students will develop their own theories and hypotheses as we explore the literature together. We will also focus on critically evaluating the methods used in this line of research, different theoretical perspectives, the ongoing research challenges, and future directions.
