Tuition Fees for Second Degree Students
Since the fall semester 2017/
You are obliged to pay tuition fees for a second degree if you
- take up studies in a second or further bachelor’s program or
- take up studies in a second or further consecutive master's program
and acquired your first higher education degree in Germany.
In which cases are you not obliged to pay tuition fees for a second degree?
You do not have to pay the tuition fee for a second degree if
- you have completed your bachelor’s program and take up a master’s program afterwards.
- you change subjects within your degree program or change programs without completing the first program.
- you completed your first degree abroad.
- you are already paying the tuition fee for international students.
- you are studying a teacher education program, as of the spring semester 2025, or you are studying an extension subject within a teacher education program.
- you are a doctoral student.
- you are enrolled in a program that is considered a continuing education program. The fees charged for the programs “Master of Comparative Business Law” and “Mannheim Master of Accounting and Taxation” are specified in the respective statutes.
- you were already enrolled in a degree program at the University of Mannheim before the act came into effect (spring semester 2017).
Paying your fees via bank transfer
Please transfer the semester fee as well as any tuition fees, if applicable, to the bank account of the University of Mannheim indicated below before the re-registration deadline*. As a payment reference, please make sure to indicate your student ID number and name.
For example:
S1234567, John DoePlease be aware that the date of receipt of payment (value date) on the account of the University of Mannheim is decisive, not the date of your bank transfer.

If you re-register late, the university will charge a late registration fee of EUR 20 in accordance with its General Statutes of Fees (Allgemeine Gebührensatzung) as of 17 May 2006.* If the deadline expires on a Sunday, a public holiday or a Saturday, the deadline expires at the end of the first subsequent working day (section 31 subsection 3 page 1 of the Administrative Procedures Act (Verwaltungsverfahrensgesetz (VwVfG)).
Exemption from the obligation to pay tuition fees
In the following cases, it is possible to be exempted from the obligation to pay tuition fees:
- if you are on academic leave of absence as defined in section 61 LHG, provided you requested the leave before the beginning of the lecture period.
- if you are completing a placement semester as defined in section 29 subsection 3 sentence 2 LHG,
- if you have a disability as defined in section 2 of the ninth book of the German Social Code (SGB IX) which causes you considerable difficulties during your studies.
Reimbursement
To apply for a reimbursement due to disenrollment, a credit balance or other reasons, please submit the form request for reimbursement of tuition fees by e-mail to the bursar's office.
Tuition fees applicable to parallel studies
In case you are enrolled in two or more degree programs at one or several higher education institutions in Baden-Württemberg at the same time, you will be obliged to pay tuition fees starting from the semester following the completion of your first degree (according to the date indicated on the degree certificate). You will receive an individual notification of fees in this case.
Duty to cooperate
All students and applicants are obliged to share any personal data the university requires in order to charge fees or grant exceptions, exemptions or reductions. They are also obliged to submit the required documents at the latest when enrolling or re-registering.
