University of Mannheim Hosts “Bildung und Corona”, a Virtual Conference on Education during the Coronavirus Pandemic

As part of the year-round virtual conference of the Society for Empirical Educational Research (digiGEBF21), the University of Mannheim hosts a virtual conference on education during the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting challenges and chances from an educational research perspective (“Bildung und Corona – Herausforderungen und Chancen aus Sicht der Bildungsforschung”). On 22 and 23 April, researchers will discuss the importance of education during the pandemic. The conference’s keynote speeches are open to the public.

The importance of education – and particularly the repeated opening and closure of educational institutions – are a regular topic of, sometimes heated, discussions about the tackling of the coronavirus crisis. How can teachers motivate students when schools are closed? How does the coronavirus crisis impact the social emotional development of children? Are online videos helpful for their learning success? These are the questions which the researchers discuss at the online conference on education during the coronavirus pandemic. They will also present the latest empirical studies on the subject. “For the current political and practical decisions in educational matters, it is very important that we have sound knowledge about how important education is for overcoming the pandemic and how the coronavirus measures affect the educational success”, explains Prof. Dr. Oliver Dickhäuser who organizes the conference on behalf of the University of Mannheim.

The keynote speeches are open to the public: On 22 April at 4 p.m. Prof. Dr. Ludger Wössmann of the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München gives an online talk on the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences with regard to the economics of education (“Corona und die Folgen: Eine (nicht nur) bildungsökonomische Perspektive”). Prof. Dr. Nina Jude from Heidelberg University gives the second keynote speech which takes place on 23 April at noon. In her talk on new challenges for the development of schools (“Schulentwicklung vor neuen Herausforderungen – Challenge accepted?”) she discusses empirical findings on the challenges for the development of schools during the pandemic.

At the conference, the latest research from all disciplines of empirical educational research will be presented, inter alia, from the fields of empirical pedagogy, educational sociology, family sociology as well as teaching methodology, economics of education, economic and business education and related research fields which are relevant to educational research.
