New on Wikipedia: Brilliant Women and Pioneers of Medical Studies

As part of a seminar in linguistics about the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, students at the University of Mannheim created a total of 24 Wikipedia articles about important women, many of whom came from Mannheim and the surrounding area.

In the advanced seminar developed by Dr. Maja Linthe, “Writing Wikipedia Texts: Women in Red Project”, students created Wikipedia articles about Else von der Leyen and Irma Klausner, among others, who were pioneers of university education for women in Germany in 1900. The Wikipedia project “Women in Red”, founded in 2016, aims at publishing more biographies of women on Wikipedia. This is intended to close the gender gap existing in the online encyclopedia as the majority of biographies on Wikipedia are about men.

As part of the seminar, two edit-a-thons were held at the University of Mannheim. These are events in which male and female authors work together on Wkipedia articles. In this way, newcomers can learn from experienced Wikipedians how to write articles. The advanced seminar in German Linguistics will be offered again in the current semester.
