Mannheim Economist Sebastian Siegloch Receives ERC Grant to Investigate Inequality in Real Estate Markets
Sebastian Siegloch, Professor of Economics at the University of Mannheim and head of the Research Department “Social Policy and Redistribution” at the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), received a prestigious funding grant from the European Research Council (ERC) amounting to a total of 1.5 million euros, which will be paid over five years.

Start of the ENGAGE.EU European University
The future of Europe will be carved by major societal challenges: digitalisation and artificial intelligence, climate change and sustainability, ageing societies and migration. Together with other leading European universities in business, economics, and social sciences University of Mannheim has formed the ENGAGE.EU alliance to provide European citizens with the set of skills and competences needed to tackle these major societal challenges. How Do Ideologies and Lobbying Connections of U.S. Politicians Influence Corporate Accounting?
Researchers at the University of Mannheim recently conducted a study on the influence of U.S. members of Congress on corporate accounting. The team led by Prof. Jannis Bischof of the collaborative research center “Accounting for Transparency” found out that ideologically motivated legislators only participate in the regulation of accounting practices at times when important economic issues are being widely discussed in the media. In contrast, members of Congress with close ties to lobby groups frequently take an active part in regulating financial accounting.

New Part-time Online Master’s Program in Data Collection and Analysis
The need for expertise in data collection and analysis is greater than ever in this day and age of digitization. As of summer 2020, the new Mannheim Master of Applied Data Science and Measurement (MDM) will specifically train experts in this area. This English online degree program will be introduced following the successful four-year pilot phase of the International Program in Survey and Data Science (IPSDS) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It is offered by Mannheim Business School, the umbrella organization for management training at the University of Mannheim, with its collaborative partner the University of Maryland (USA). The deadline for applications for the introductory year is May 25, 2020.

Men in Senior Management Positions Show Particularly Strong Opposition to the Board Gender Quota in Germany
Who endorses the gender quota on supervisory boards, and who rejects it? In a recent study, a team of researchers from the Universities of Mannheim and Göttingen has looked more closely at this question. The results show a strong discrepancy in support for the quota between men and women.
