Culture and Economy: English and American Studies

Program ambassador

Hi, I’m Nathalie and I’ve been enrolled in the master’s program in Culture and Economy: English and American Studies with Business Administration as a specialist subject at the University of Mannheim since the fall semester 2021/2022. Before that, I earned a bachelor's degree in Culture and Economy: English and American Studies. Since I have been looking for the right degree course for myself for a long time, I know how important insights from students can be. Please write to me if you have any questions. I'm happy to help!

Why I chose this program

The Culture and Economics degree programs combine Humanities and Economics. I chose English and American Studies as my core subject and decided on Business Administration as a specialist subject. However, you can also choose Economics as combination major. If you want to, you can attend lectures from the other economic subject in addition to the selected specialist subject and get credits (additional module).

In English studies, the focus is on Linguistics and Literature. In the bachelor’s program, you will specialize in one of the two fields after the first three semesters. In addition, we have other modules, for example on language practice or cultural studies. In Business Administration, we will gain insights into various economic areas such as management, marketing, and finance.

If you have successfully completed your bachelor's degree, you can then continue your specialization in the master's program, for example in Linguistics. You can also focus on Literary Studies or combine both. There are also courses on language skills and cultural competences. In this subject, we take courses which are part of the the MMM (Mannheim Master in Management) program in Accounting and Taxation, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Management and Operations. You can freely choose the focus for your specialist subject or decide if you want to do something in different areas.

Studying at the University of Mannheim

  • What’s special about the program?

One of the reasons why I chose the University of Mannheim is the international orientation, which makes it relatively easy to study abroad for one or two semesters. There are many different partner universities around the world where you can spend a semester without having to pay additional tuition fees. In addition, the university's libraries and lecture halls are modern, well-equipped and very centrally located. At career fairs such as the annual Career Fair, you can quickly find people already working in the field you are interested in.

The University of Mannheim enjoys a very good international reputation, both in the Humanities as well as in Business Administration or Economics. The combination of these disciplines is only available at a few other universities, which is why it is advisable to stay in Mannheim after having earned the bachelor’s degree to pursue a master’s degree.

  • Extracurricular activities

The University of Mannheim also has a lot to offer outside of your studies. For example, we can test the wide-ranging sports program, end the Thursday evening at a Schneckenhof party, participate in the various events and join one of the student organizations or a departmental student committees.

After your studies

  • Career Opportunities

With a master's degree in Culture and Economy, you can work in cultural and event management, PR and communication, or in state and federal authorities.

What you need to know

  • Frequently asked questions

We are often asked: “English studies, what is that?” – followed by: “And what do you do with this degree?” and “Why are you also studying Business Administration?”

But the bachelor’s and master’s program in Culture and Economy are not a preparation for a particular job. Rather, they offer you a variety of options that depend on your personal preferences and abilities. For example, you can work in PR and communications, or in a company's human resources department. To make it easier for you to make the decision at the end of your studies, you can get to know individual areas in internships and see for yourself what it is like to work in that field.
