We are excited to invite you to the next Mannheim Open Science Meetup on November 30th, where Dr. Marlene Altenmüller (LMU Munich) will discuss science communication, sharing personal information when communicating science, and how this affects trust in science.

The Mannheim Open Science Meetup is a grassroots initiative that brings together Mannheim-based academics from diverse backgrounds with a shared interest in transparent, reliable research. Scholars from all scientific disciplines are welcome to join our recurring meetings, both experts and Open Science novices.

Key Facts:

  • What? Gaining trust in science: (How) should science communication get personal?
  • Who? Dr. Marlene Altenmüller (LMU Munich)
  • Where? Zoom: https://uni-mannheim.zoom.us/j/66767024754?pwd=d0EzcWd5QWtGb2VHYW1KeCsydmZ1dz09 (Meeting ID: 667 6702 4754; Passcode: 196038)
  • Abstract: When communicating their science, researchers are often advised to appear “approachable” by sharing personal information to gain the public’s trust. However, disclosing personal details is a doubled-edged sword: It can have ambivalent effects on laypeople’s trust in science, can be used to up- and devalue researchers and their findings, but it can also buffer science rejection and increase trust. This meetup session will ask: What is the state of trust in science? How can sharing personal details in science communication affect this trust? And, how can personal information be used in a more deliberate way?
