Reproducibility and replicability of research are quickly becoming established norms across the sciences and now frequently appear as requirements for funding, publication, and even academic employment. But these standards, developed principally for computational research, be applied to the diverse set of qualitative research conducted by scientists? In this talk, Sebastian Karcher argues for research transparency as a meta-standard equally applicable to qualitative work. Given the wide range of methods, methodologies, and epistemologies used by qualitative researchers, however, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to transparency in qualitative research. Instead, he describes a menu of options, including pre-registration, data sharing, method appendices, shared CAQDAS projects, and Annotation for Transparent Inquiry. The talk provides key considerations for using these strategies and briefly shows effective examples of their use.
