This course first outlines the basics of data and business process modelling based on wide-spread approaches such as entity relationship diagrams, event-driven process chains (EPC), and business process model and notation (BPMN). Besides the lecture, teaching assistants offer a bi-weekly 90 minutes exercise class. The exercise classes' goal is the repetition and expansion of the knowledge students acquire in the lecture. To reach that goal the exercise class will offer a mixture of additional knowledge, exercises, and an interactive element, which will improve the ability of knowledge exchange and self-dependent work in small groups.

In order to pass this course successfully, the student has to reach at least an overall grade of 4.0.
Please note that you are only allowed to register for the alternative exam date in our re-sit exam period if you registered for the first attempt and failed it.

We will cover classic and current debates on interstate warfare, civil war, insurgencies and armed groups, coup d’états, terrorism and state repression. Wahlen sind der institutionelle Kern der repräsentativen Demokratie. Deswegen stehen sie auch im Zentrum der politischen Soziologie demokratischer politischer Systeme. Die Vorlesung setzt sich aus normativem, historischem und empirisch-analytischem Blickwinkel mit Wahlen und ihrer realen Bedeutung für die repräsentative Demokratie auseinander. The Political System of Germany
This lecture introduces into the political system of Germany and the scholarly literature about it. This literature provides different perspectives, ranging from game-theoretical illustrations of major turning points in the history of the German political system, the constitutional foundations, the vertical and horizontal separation of powers to the comparative empirical evaluation of basic political features and developments. To understand the political system of Germany, students should have interest in analytical theory and methodology. They should meet three conditions:
• Firstly, knowledge of the basic literature in comparative politics;
• Secondly, knowledge of the historical principles and features of the BRD;
• Thirdly, high interest political science research, which goes beyond German political narratives
As an accompanying reading, I recommend reading the book by Grotz, Florian and Wolfgang Schroeder. 2023. The Political System of Germany, Palgrave Macmillan/
The lecture is interactive, which means that participants can ask questions. To foster interactive communication, the slides of the lecture will be made available before the session.
Aims:
• Ability to understand and evaluate political science literature on the political system of Germany;
• Excellent knowledge of the constitutional foundations and separation of powers in the political system of Germany;
• Understanding of comparative evaluations of the political system of Germany;
Attendance: Preparation of the listed chapters and articles for active participation in the discussions.

Die Vorlesung führt in das Studium der Soziologie ein. Sie erläutert den Gegenstandsbereich des Faches und zeigt seine leitenden Frage- und Aufgabenstellungen auf. Ein besonderes Gewicht liegt dabei zunächst auf den methodologischen Vorgehensweisen, insbesondere dem Konzept soziologischer Erklärungen. Beschreibung:
The last 200 years have witnessed rapid economic growth through the development of new technologies, growth of global trade and rise of international financial and monetary institutions. However, the potential dangers of our modern economic system have also become apparent in fears over growing inequality and environmental degradation. To understand our economy today, we must look back to what came before, examining the world before industrialisation. Under what circumstances was economic growth possible in the pre-industrial era? How far were trade and exchange conducted at the local, regional or global levels? How far did economic growth improve general living standards or only benefitted political elites?
This course will explore these questions through providing an introduction to economic development from the eleventh to eighteenth centuries. We will examine themes including demography, agriculture, technology, markets and state formation and engage with major topics including the growth of imperialism and slavery, the Great and Little Divergences and the First Industrial Revolution. By the end of the lecture series, you will have a grounding in the fundamentals of pre-industrial economic history and have reflected on what the past can reveal about the economy of the present.

Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, major (syntactic) contrasts between English and German. By the end of the course students will have gained knowledge of the key literary genres, technical aspects, and critical terms that will form the foundation for the further development of an academic understanding of the wide-ranging scope of British and American literatures.

A digital reader with primary and secondary texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester. Additionally, students are required to purchase the following texts:

Beschreibung:
During this course students will learn the basic skills and methodologies necessary for the study of literature, especially with regard to anglophone letters and cultures. Students will learn how to analyze poetry, prose, and drama by studying major works of British and American literature from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. The focus will be on the technical as well as cultural aspects of works of literature and their historical contexts.
The course will start by answering the question what literature and the study of literature actually are and then provide an introduction to the three main genres of literature written in English (prose, drama, and poetry). In discussing these genres, we will take a closer look at key theoretical concepts and tools for the analysis of literary texts. Besides, we will also identify important periods in the history of British and American literature.
Important Note RE: Tutorials
The lecture will be accompanied by mandatory tutorials for which you have to sign up separately. Please note that the tutorials are attached to specific lectures and are not interchangeable. While both lectures will cover the same content, the scheduling might differ slightly between sessions and it is therefore advisable to attend a tutorial with the tutors who are also attending the lecture in question.
Students who register for lecture A (Dr. Kucharzewski) should therefore also register for a corresponding tutorial by Maja Häcker, Lea May, or Jule Remmers.

This lecture will introduce students to the theory and practice of analysing literary texts. It will cover both literary theory and literary history, referring to a wide range of primary texts covering the three main genres and most of the periods. The course will be accompanied by a mandatory tutorial. Beschreibung:
Die Vorlesung führt Studienanfänger in das Gegenstandsgebiet, die Methoden und die Begriffe des Faches Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft ein. Sie stellt zentrale Kategorien wie 'Fiktionalität' und 'Ästhetik' vor, behandelt die drei Großgattungen Epik, Drama und Lyrik, bietet einen Durchgang durch die deutsche Literaturgeschichte seit dem Barockzeitalter und erörtert einflussreiche Ansätze der Literaturtheorie. Alle diese Aspekte werden anhand exemplarischer literarischer Werke veranschaulicht.
Als Basis und verbindliche Begleitlektüre für die Vorlesung dient folgende Einführungsdarstellung:

Für alle Teilnehmer der Vorlesung ist der Besuch eines begleitenden Tutoriums verpflichtend, in dem der Stoff vertieft und ergänzt wird. Außerdem umfasst die Veranstaltung ein Online-Tutorium zur Praxis des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens, das Sandra Beck organisiert.

Die Vorlesung mit begleitendem Tutorium vermittelt Grundwissen über Teilgebiete, Konzepte und Methoden der Linguistik mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der deutschen Sprache. Zentrale Kategorien und Beschreibungsmodelle auf verschiedenen Analyseebenen – Pragmatik; Semantik; Syntax; Morphologie; Phonologie; Graphematik und Orthographie; Textlinguistik – werden erläutert und in Übungen (im Rahmen der Tutorien) erprobt.

The lecture International Cultural Studies introduces students to basic select topics and concepts related to the field of cultural studies by discussing texts and theories from international scholars. It provides an overview of key terms such as race, class, gender, and identity among others and enables students to understand and reflect upon these key terms and their underlying concepts within their historical, societal, and cultural context. To do so, it raises questions on how cultural texts and practices shape our understanding of society, politics, history and culture.

There will be 5 parallel groups (International Cultural Studies: Lecture A-E) for this course. You will need to register for one group only.
Each parallel group consists of two complementary sections: a weekly preparatory lecture (45 minutes) followed by an interactive discussion session (45 minutes).
Students will be able to prepare the lecture material on their own time. In each guided discussion session, students collaboratively engage in more detail in topics and concepts introduced in the lecture recordings.
Each recorded lecture will be made available with all other materials (presentations, texts) a week before each discussion session.

Wie sind die romanischen Sprachen entstanden? Wie ist ihre Ausdifferenzierung zu erklären, ihre heutige 'Gestalt' zu beschreiben? Welche Begriffe, Theorien und Methoden stellt die moderne Sprachwissenschaft dafür zur Verfügung? Welche Anwendungsbereiche eröffnen sprachwissenschaftliche Theorien und Methoden (z. B. Textlinguistik, Gesprächsanalyse, Medienanalyse, Spracherwerb und Mehrsprachigkeit, Soziolinguistik...)? Diese und ähnliche Fragen werden in der Ringvorlesung behandelt und dabei gemeinsame Grundlagen für das weitere sprachwissenschaftliche Studium vermittelt.

Beschreibung:
Womit befasst sich die Geschichtswissenschaft? Wie arbeiten HistorikerInnen? Was sind heutige Themenschwerpunkte und was unterscheidet die Geschichtsschreibung unserer Zeit von der des 19. Jahrhunderts? Was sind unsere Quellen? Mit diesen und vielen weiteren Fragen der Geschichtsschreibung befasst sich die Einführungsvorlesung. Sie ist als Ringvorlesung angelegt und lässt Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Teildisziplinen grundlegende methodische Herausforderungen sowie Aufgabenfelder der einzelnen Großepochen vorstellen. Das Mittelalter war finster – wie kommen wir darauf? Wie sehr ist unsere Wahrnehmung der Vormoderne von der Geschichtswissenschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts geprägt? Kann man Geschichte schreiben, während sie noch Teil unserer Gegenwart ist? Letztlich geht es immer wieder um die Frage, was historisches Denken und Arbeiten eigentlich heißt.
Die Einführungsvorlesung wird als Ringvorlesung durchgeführt, d. h. die jeweiligen Einzeltermine liegen in der Verantwortung unterschiedlicher DozentInnen. Im Ausnahmefall kann eine Sitzung online stattfinden, die Unterrichtssprache ist deutsch oder englisch.

This course will introduce students to distinctive aspects that comprise the law and legal system of the United States. Topics will examine the interplay between state and federal court systems, as well as sources of law and lawmaking, the American legal education and becoming a lawyer. We will explore key subjects from first-year law school curriculum, including torts, contract, property, constitutional law, criminal law, and criminal and civil procedure. Other topics will include the jury trial, class actions, punitive damages, and practical aspects of the law in the United States, such as rules of discovery and the basics of legal research, writing and trial advocacy.
The course will be split into three parts: first, general aspects of U.S. laws and legal system; second, an overview of substantive topics in key subject areas of law; and, third, practicing law in the United States including commencing a lawsuit, research, and litigation.
Your final grade will comprise class preparedness, homework assignment (written or oral) and a written final exam.

The course gives an introduction to German private law especially for foreign law students. The course begins with an overview of the legal sources of German law. In particular, the special position of the Civil Code and its historical development will be discussed.
Then the most important legal areas of the Civil Code will be worked out on the basis of systematic descriptions and case solutions. By focusing on the law of torts, the law of obligations and the law of property, the working method in German civil law is clarified. Short introductions to inheritance and family law, company law and civil procedural law round off the course through private law.

This course will examine all major aspects of cross-border litigation as the conventional and most important method of international dispute resolution between private parties. Primary emphasis is on the conduct of international litigation in EU Member States, but there will also be comparative treatment of other major jurisdictions (notably the UK and the U.S.).
After introducing the concept of international litigation and the main policy issues at stake, the course will comprehensively address the crucial procedural law questions lawyers have to deal with when bringing a cross-border civil or commercial dispute to a national court. These include: international jurisdiction (Which court is competent?), coordination between different jurisdictions (lis pendens, provisional measures), conduct of proceedings (service of documents, taking evidence abroad) as well as recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments.
Students who have completed the course will have developed a sound understanding of international procedural law that will enable them to successfully work in a litigation context, be it in the judiciary, a law firm or a legal department. The course is suited for exchange and graduate students (LL.M., M.C.B.L.) in law and related fields as well as for LL.B. students aiming to cover the relevant aspects of international procedural law required for taking the First German State Exam according to § 8 Abs. 2 Nr. 5 JAPrO.

One of the most significant developments both in international law and international relations throughout the last two decades has been the (re-)emergence of an international legal order based on a robust interpretation of the concept of international criminal justice. By establishing both international and hybrid criminal courts addressing international core crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the international community has demonstrated an ever more growing commitment to end impunity for the most heinous crimes affecting mankind as a whole and to hold those bearing individual criminal responsibility personally accountable.
This course aims at providing students with a fundamental understanding of this increasingly important realm of public international law. Thus, in a first approach, an overview both of international criminal law’s theoretical foundation as well as its historical sources will be provided. Adjacently, focus will be given to the ad-hoc tribunals of the 1990s (such as the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia) and most prominently to the International Criminal Court (ICC) as the first permanent international organization addressing matters of international criminal justice.
Complementary to this institutional approach, the second part of the course will address material law aspects: Besides the abovementioned crimes as stipulated in the Rome Statute forming the International Criminal Court, attention will be given to further international crimes such as piracy or terrorism. Additionally, questions such as immunity from prosecution for heads of state or government, modes of liability, interdependencies between the national and international judicial sphere and notions of state sovereignty will be addressed throughout the course.

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a body of rules that seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict. IHL protects those who are not participating in hostilities, and those who are no longer participating in hostilities. This body of law imposes limits on the methods and means of warfare. IHL forms part of public international law and is largely based on treaties and rules of customary international law.
In this course the development as well as the basic concepts of IHL will be explored. Students will be introduced to the most important documents governing armed conflict, learn how to apply these and will consider the challenges posed to the application of IHL in armed conflicts. A large part of the course will focus on the new developments in IHL including the emergence of new forms of armed conflicts and the development and use of new technologies in armed conflict.

Assessment for this course will consist of one presentation and one take-home exam.

This course is an introduction to certain fundamental rights of the American legal system through the Bill of Rights and the adjudication of the United States Supreme Court. Students will be taught how to read and brief cases through selected excerpts of landmark decisions. This course will examine all major aspects of cross-border litigation as the conventional and most important method of international dispute resolution between private parties. Primary emphasis is on the conduct of international litigation in EU Member States, but there will also be comparative treatment of other major jurisdictions (notably the UK and the U.S.).
After introducing the concept of international litigation and the main policy issues at stake, the course will comprehensively address the crucial procedural law questions lawyers have to deal with when bringing a cross-border civil or commercial dispute to a national court. These include: international jurisdiction (Which court is competent?), coordination between different jurisdictions (lis pendens, provisional measures), conduct of proceedings (service of documents, taking evidence abroad) as well as recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments.

One of the most significant developments both in international law and international relations throughout the last two decades has been the (re-)emergence of an international legal order based on a robust interpretation of the concept of international criminal justice. By establishing both international and hybrid criminal courts addressing international core crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, the international community has demonstrated an ever more growing commitment to end impunity for the most heinous crimes affecting mankind as a whole and to hold those bearing individual criminal responsibility personally accountable.
This course aims at providing students with a fundamental understanding of this increasingly important realm of public international law. Thus, in a first approach, an overview both of international criminal law’s theoretical foundation as well as its historical sources will be provided. Adjacently, focus will be given to the ad-hoc tribunals of the 1990s (such as the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia) and most prominently to the International Criminal Court (ICC) as the first permanent international organization addressing matters of international criminal justice.
Complementary to this institutional approach, the second part of the course will address material law aspects: Besides the abovementioned crimes as stipulated in the Rome Statute forming the International Criminal Court, attention will be given to further international crimes such as piracy or terrorism. Additionally, questions such as immunity from prosecution for heads of state or government, modes of liability, interdependencies between the national and international judicial sphere and notions of state sovereignty will be addressed throughout the course.

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a body of rules that seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict. IHL protects those who are not participating in hostilities, and those who are no longer participating in hostilities. This body of law imposes limits on the methods and means of warfare. IHL forms part of public international law and is largely based on treaties and rules of customary international law.
In this course the development as well as the basic concepts of IHL will be explored. Students will be introduced to the most important documents governing armed conflict, learn how to apply these and will consider the challenges posed to the application of IHL in armed conflicts. A large part of the course will focus on the new developments in IHL including the emergence of new forms of armed conflicts and the development and use of new technologies in armed conflict.
Assessment
Assessment for this course will consist of one presentation and one take-home exam.
In this course the development as well as the basic concepts of IHL will be explored. Vom Problem zum Algorithmus, vom Algorithmus zum Programm
- Entwurf von Algorithmen: schrittweise Verfeinerung, Modularität, Objektorientierung (Klassenhierarchien, Vererbung), Rekursion
- Die objektorientierte Programmiersprache Java
- Einfache Datenstrukturen (verkettete Liste, Binärbaum, B-Baum)
- Modellierung mit UML: Klassendiagramme, Aktivitätsdiagramme, Zustandsdiagramme
- Einführung in die Theorie der Algorithmen: Berechenbarkeit, Komplexität (O-Kalkül), Testen und Verifikation von Algorithmen und Programmen
